Death by COVID-19

As professional Fiduciaries we have to deal with Death at times. It is never easy. There is always a sadness when we lose someone, but the Virus makes it much worse, especially for the family.

Our Client

Sean had this Irish charm and humor. I would joke with him and say I bet back in the day you had many a girl. There would be a pause and a slight twinkle in his eye. No words needed to be said. His humor is what set him apart from many.

Unfortunately, Sean had a few health issues. He had 3 stints in his heart. He had to go to dialysis three times a week and his dementia was getting worse. We were in charge of his Medical needs as well as his financial. Needless to say, we saw a lot of Sean. Last month his doctor insisted we go with him to his doctor visit due to some other medical issue. Two days after the visit Sean was hospitalized due to having a fever and delirium. The hospital contacted us and let us know that he tested positive for Covid-19.

The Isolation
We all self-isolated for 2 weeks to make sure not to spread the virus. I contacted everyone I knew he was around including Ready Wheels. Management called me back and thanked me so much for letting them know. That way they could make sure the employee would stay at home and that they would sanitize the bus. I was the only person that had contacted them regarding any notifications. I am sure that my client was not the only one. I believe it is our duty to keep all people necessary informed.

It wasn’t until 2 weeks later that the CDC of San Mateo County contacted me about tracing the virus. When I had mentioned Ready Wheels that was not even on their list.
Sean's Story
Sean was in the hospital for about a month. I was told if he tested negative 2 times consecutively, he would be released. The third week he improved and the hospital was waiting for the county to give the OK to let him go back to the community where he lived. Then he relapsed and his breathing became very difficult. He was medicated to ease the discomfort. What surprised me is that he passed the testing 2 times and then tested positive for Covid-19. I asked the doctor how he could get it again. She paused and said that the tests are not full-proof. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? If Sean had been released, he would have contaminated more people, because he still had the Virus.

I kept the family notified of Sean’s health status. The most heart wrenching part of this,
is that Sean could not see his 2 sons and they could not see him.  He died alone .

I notified Sean’s sister and brother in law as well as his Ex-wife. I thought it best to let the mother advise the boys. I will be making all of the arrangements for the family. Obviously, a church service will be done once the state allows community gatherings.
Prayers for Sean's Family

I found that our services take a lot of pressure off of the family. They are grieving. They do not have to make any of the arrangements. All they have to do is advise me of what they want and our company will make sure it gets done. It is such a blessing to the family at this time. They have told me how grateful they are. It is not easy, but we a are there for our clients until the end.
Sean may you rest in Peace. You will always be remembered.
