Disaster Fund for Mendocino County Accepting Donations

Dear Friends,

Strong winds contributed to more than 60 wildfires across California's North Coast starting in the early morning hours on Monday, October 9. In Mendocino County, the Redwood Complex Fire has burned almost 30,000 acres in Redwood Valley and Potter Valley and is 5% contained. At least 50 homes have been lost and any more are threatened.

The Community Foundation of Mendocino County has mobilized its Disaster Fund for Mendocino County to collect tax-deductible contributions of any amount.  Please click  here  to make a gift.   Donations are also being accepted at our office or at branches of the Savings Bank of Mendocino County.

The Foundation will provide immediate response grants to North Coast Opportunities, Inc. (NCO).  Due to fires in Lake County over the past three years, NCO has developed a fair, efficient, and transparent process to distribute needed relief funds to individuals and families affected by the fires. We are grateful that they have a system in place to ensure our community members will get the help they need. Individuals in need of assistance should contact NCO (707-467-3200).

In the days ahead, the Community Foundation will also be working with decision-makers from the nonprofit sector and local government to assess urgent needs, identify short - term gaps and gather information that will inform longer-term recovery efforts in collaboration with Mendocino County Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (aka, Mendocino County VOAD), a grouping of community service organizations brought together to improve coordination and communication among nonprofits - and between local government agencies, the charitable sector, faith communities and the private sector - following a disaster.

We will share more information as it becomes available on our website  and Facebook page.

Warmly,

Megan Barber Allende
