Artist Amanda Amend wowed judges at the Compass Music and Arts Center when she was recognized as one of three artists to receive awards for their work in the BARN ART exhibit early last year. Amend, with a tangible passion for watercolors, presented 5 originals for consideration and all were accepted for the show. The judges commented fulsomely on Amends' skill with composition, reverence for beauty and extraordinary use of color. As an award winner she was invited to exhibit at the Compass Center, and her new show, entitled 'Lost Edges' and featuring over 30 of her works, opens at the Compass Center on May 10
th. Not only did Amend impress the judges, but Joshua Collier, Artistic Director for BARN OPERA and acclaimed opera singer, was visibly enchanted by her work and asked Amend to help identify some of her works to publicize the 2019 Program for Barn Opera, the theme of which is Love. This proved to be an easy and rewarding collaboration and the next performance by Barn Opera, Carmen, opens on May 17
th at Brandon Music and features Amend's work on all publicity.
Many appreciators of Amends' work describe it as "ethereal". There is no doubt that when Amend is creating her art works she is capturing the mystery behind and within the everyday through her use of luminous watercolor.
Amends' art exhibit, "Lost Edges" will be on display in the Compass Music and Arts Center Exhibition Hall from May 10
th to the end of June 2019 with an opening reception on May 10

News from the Brandon Congregational Church!
Brandon Congregational Church in Action will once again be holding their Annual Plant Sale-
Saturday, May 25 from 9 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. We will be selling Brandon grown shrubs, perennials, annuals, herbs and containers, and featuring a special planting project for children.
In addition there will be a Hot Dog and Baked Bean Lunch (from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m) and a table filled with home made goodies for which free will offerings will be accepted. This is always a fun event to share with neighbors and friends, enjoy downtown Brandon and help support our programs.

Art of Wood: Brandon Artist Guild
Opens New Exhibit
The series will run from May 3
through June 25.
The Brandon Artists Guild (The BAG) continues its 20
th
anniversary celebration with a
new exhibit, "The Art of Wood."
The show features pieces from the BAG's exhibiting members, who work in diverse media including paint, fiber, glass, ceramics, collage - and wood.
"Though the theme is wood, the exhibit will feature works and interpretations across all media," explains Stacey Stanhope, a potter and BAG board member. "Wood is just the sliver of an idea; each artist will branch off depending on how inspiration strikes. Wooden it be great to see what they come up with?"
The exhibit is the second in a series of four themed shows honoring our planet. This 20th-anniversary year for the BAG is also the Chinese Year of the Pig, which recognizes nature's elements, Earth, Wood, Water, and Fire.
The BAG is devoting four exhibits to these elements.
In addition to Art of Wood in May and June, the remaining exhibits are:
Art of Water - June 28 through August 27
Art of Fire - August 30 through October 29
The BAG, at 7 Center Street in Brandon, is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10AM to 5PM, and Sunday from 10AM to 4PM. Open seven days a week starting May 1. Information: 802 247-4956.

Brandon Free Public Library Used Book Sale Season Begins
Opening for the season!!
The Friends of the Brandon Free Public Library used book sale opens for the season on Wednesday, May 15 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., every Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. until mid-October. This is probably the best organized and longest running used book sale in Vermont. In the basement of the Library you will find an amazing selection of fiction and non-fiction books for all ages at very low prices. This is probably the best organized and longest running used book sale in Vermont.
For the month of May; buy one book and get another one free - the free book must be of the same value as the one you buy or less. There are new books that came in over the winter which are now part of our collections. As a result, a good 'spring cleaning' has taken place, some older materials have been culled and there are many newer and different books on our shelves.
Books are arranged by type and subject. There is both hard-cover and paperback fiction, non-fiction of every description, and books for children, toddlers, and young adults. There are special sections devoted to gardening, cooking, how-to and do-it-yourself projects.
All of the income from this sale is given by the Friends for the purchase of books and other materials and to help underwrite special projects for the Library like the Summer Children's Program in July. The Book Sale and the Holiday Auction are the primary sources for funding for these programs. The construction has impacted our sales and we depend on our neighbors and friends for their support for all the wonderful things that happen at our Library.
We can use more volunteers to fully staff this important fundraising project. If you have time Wednesday evenings or on Friday or Saturday, sign up to work. No experience is necessary and you may volunteer for as many or as few days as you'd like or you may sign up as a substitute. Training will be provided. Volunteer and find out what the 'oldest, continuing, permanent, used book sale in Vermont' is all about. Call the Library at 247-8230 for more information or to volunteer. Bring a friend if you'd like to work with a 'buddy'.

Hilton Park is an Americana / Folk trio with a unique sound from southern Maine made up of father, Bruce Hilton, youngest son Connor and close musical partner, friend and neighbor Gregg Pannier, a classically trained organist and piano virtuoso. The trio is making the return trip to Brandon this coming Mother's Day weekend to perform once again at Brandon Music on May 11
th.
Although the trio started out writing and playing music together for their own enjoyment, within a very short time (eight months) they found themselves recognized by the New England Music Awards (NEMA) as one of the best roots acts in New England and by the Boston Examiner as the band that has "
reinvented acoustic". Today Hilton Park is renowned for being virtuoso musicians, styling traditional folk/country instruments with fresh and original tunes. Their stage show includes up to 10 acoustic instruments , (six and twelve string guitars, dobro, mandolin, bouzokki, Weissenborn and dulcimer ) played skillfully by the father and son duo with musical partner playing virtuoso piano.
Hilton Park has a beautifully crafted melodic voice. Their harmonic finesse, likened to Crosby, Stills and Nash, authentic lyrics and good song craft continues to enthrall audiences, putting many listeners on the edge of their seats.

Americana group Cradle Switch returns to Brandon Music
Brandon Music welcomes back firm favorites Cradle Switch to Brandon Music on Saturday May 25th. A five-piece acoustic Americana group, based in Cambridge, NY, Cradle Switch's repertoire promises something for everyone. With ballads as well as up-tempo rhythms, the group's lyrics cover the emotional spectrum moving easily from spirited and gritty to some mellow love songs too. With each performance Cradle Switch balances contemporary songs and classic tunes drawing from bluegrass, country, folk, and a little blues with their own authentic compositions.
Singer-songwriters Ferrilyn Sourdiffe and Dave Lawlor swap out guitars for banjo and mandolin, while group member Kate Ritter brings it on the fiddle, along with some angelic vocal harmonies to add to Ferrilyn and Dave's robust vocals. Bruce Weatherby adds some bounce on the upright bass and David Norman keeps the beat on percussion (and has been known to wear his special washboard tie to gigs). Since 2010 Cradle Switch has played regularly at various concert series, music festivals, cafes and other venues in the northeast and released their debut album Cradleswitch in September 2017.

 educator and producer who is also from Boston. This is Daly and Thoma's fourth annual tour of the US. It comes on the back of their new and top - rated double album "Lunar" which was voted No1 by Global Music Network on the

And now for something completely different: Brandon Music welcomes The Rough and Tumble

In 2018 Brandon Music welcomed for the first time the American duo, The Rough and Tumble, two young and very talented singer songwriters and musicians complete with a menagerie of instruments ranging from acoustic guitars to mailbox snares to a banjolele. The Rough and Tumble delighted the audience with their seamless harmonies, professional musicianship, their orchestra of unusual instruments and their great personalities, exuberance and engaging jokes and stories, "worthy of an HBO special" according to Linda Bolton of Cozy Cabin House Concerts. They return June 1 to weave their magic and delight the audience once again at Brandon Music.
Formerly from Nashville, The Rough & Tumble, Mallory Graham and Scott Tyler, now find themselves living full time on the road, in a 16ft camper with an 85 lb puppy named Puddle and performing almost 150 shows a year. If you ask either of the duo how their lives ended up this way they'll likely respond, "with careful planning, spreadsheets and shoddy cell phone service."
Since forming in 2011 The Rough and Tumble have released 5 EPs and two albums. Their albums are largely biographical rehearsing the trials and tribulations as well as the fun times of being on the road full time. Their album We Made Ourselves a Home When We Didn't Know (February 2018), retraces their mileage back to their footsteps and explores the struggle between going home and being home already when there's no other home and everywhere is home, an album "as cozy, comfortable and inviting as a well-worn couch." explains Bill Kopp of Mountain Xpress. Their upcoming album, written during a time of doggedly trying despite the odds and a self-proclaimed "year of honesty", titled,
Howling Back at the Wounded Dog will be released on September 6, 2019.

OPERA at-a-glance: the latest exhibit at the Compass Music and Arts Center
Did you know that opera singers are basically Olympic athletes?
An opera singer has to be able to sustain high notes over a long period of time while using their body to amplify a sound so that it can be heard over a full orchestra and do so without any microphones. Opera singers show us the loudest sounds and the highest pitches the human body can produce. It takes many years before someone can audition to be cast in a professional company. This is one of the facts you can discover by visiting the 'Opera at-a-glance' exhibit in the Compass Music and Arts Center.
The Center is also providing a listening room where visitors can relax and sample different operas and hear the astounding voices of such great opera singers as Luciano Pavarotti and Renée Fleming.
The history of recorded sound is a further strength of the Compass Center as it hosts the Phonograph Rooms. Part of the exhibit will be devoted to how recording helped to popularize opera for all to enjoy.
The Compass Center is celebrating the world of opera with this exhibit to launch the
collaboration between the Compass Music and Arts Foundation and BARN OPERA and its founder and artistic director Josh Collier who is an internationally acclaimed opera singer.
The Foundation, through the new BARN OPERA venture, is organizing performances of loved operas through 2018 and beyond.

Call for Exhibit Proposals at the Compass Music and Arts Center
Compass is seeking innovative work for solo and/or group exhibits from artists working in a variety of media.
Curators and both emerging and established artists are encouraged to apply. Site-specific work/installations will also be considered. This is a rolling open call for exhibits.
A variety of exhibit spaces are available, giving flexibility to artists for the scope of their vision and needs.

We specialize in contemporary music and rediscovered masterpieces - not the same old pieces that everyone else records..... we have just completed a massive ten -CD series for Russia's greatest living composer Artyomov, a similar series for Cambridge MA organ composer Carson Cooman and are signing superb artists from around the world Including (this year already) USA, UK, France, Australia, Malta and Iran. Our recordings are available at all CD and digital /streaming sites but you can come to our store, discuss and sample over 500 titles of music from the 15
th to 21
st century.
