Alachua County Delegation Luncheon & Public Hearing Recap
Our Community Shared Issues of Importance with Our Delegates
The Greater Gainesville Chamber hosted a luncheon for our Alachua County Delegates—Senator Keith Perry, Representative Chuck Brannan, Representative Chuck Clemons and Representative Clovis Watson—last Monday, September 23, in advance of the Delegation’s Public Hearing. Held at the Santa Fe College Fine Arts Hall, our members first enjoyed lunch and networking with each other and our Delegates before the start of the hearing. About 100 community policy leaders and citizens then testified before the Delegates on their concerns leading into the 2020 Florida Legislative Session.
The Chamber petitioned the Delegation for several items, including: full funding for the state’s economic development and tourism marketing entities; measures to promote job creation and economic opportunity in key industries; support for funding for the University of Florida to continue its ascent to top-five status; and funding to advance the construction of the Santa Fe College downtown Blount Center campus. Other issues presented to the Delegation included: needed environmental protections; infrastructure upgrades; increased funding for schools and technical and vocational training programs; increased funding for healthcare and mental health programs; salary increases for public safety and enforcement professionals; and equity in our justice system, among others.
The 2020 Florida Legislative Session opens January 14, 2020, with upcoming committee weeks held October 14 to 25, 2019; November 4 to 8 and 12 to 15, 2019; and December 9 to 13, 2019.

GAINESVILLE, FL (9/20/19) –The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) announced Friday that the Florida High School Track & Field State Championships will return to the University of Florida campus as part of a three-year partnership with the Gainesville Sports Commission (GSC).
“It gives me great pride to announce that the GSC will be hosting the Florida High School Track & Field State Championships on May 13th-16th, 2020 at James G. Pressly Stadium, Percy Beard Track” said Gainesville Sports Commission Executive Director, Joleen Cacciatore Miller.
She went on to say, “The GSC is excited to bring back the State Championships to our community, which has not been hosted here since 2004. Today’s announcement comes from the incredible collaboration of the FHSAA, GSC, Alachua County, University Athletic Association and University of Florida. Hosting the FHSAA Track & Field State Championships in Alachua County will allow our high school athletes to stay local and compete on this elite track. Additionally, this will create significant economic impact in our community by visiting attendees from all over the state of Florida. We look forward to welcoming the state track and field participants and spectators to Alachua County!”

2019 E.T. and Vam York Service Above Self Award
To express their appreciation for the support provided by Alachua County Rotarians during Dr. E.T. York’s tenure as District 6970 Governor, the late Dr. E. T. York and his wife Vam provided an endowment to fund in perpetuity the Rotary Club of Gainesville Service Above Self Award. In 2010 the award was renamed after its benefactors.
Presented annually, this distinguished award symbolizes Rotary’s commitment to service and the desire of the Rotary Club of Gainesville to encourage and recognize service to others in our community. The award takes its name from the Rotary motto “Service Above Self.”
The recipient will be an individual or organization from the Gainesville/Alachua County area that has rendered outstanding, dedicated and unselfish service to enhance the quality of life of the citizens and youth of our area. The award is based on achievement during any appropriate time span - a year, or a lifetime. The award may be made in the memory of an individual.
What is the award?
- A $1,000 gift to The Rotary Foundation, for support of international scholars, in honor of the recipient;
- Designation of the recipient as a Paul Harris Fellow of The Rotary Foundation. (In the event the recipient is an organization, or is an individual who is already a Paul Harris Fellow, the recipient may nominate another individual to receive the Paul Harris Fellowship, subject to approval of the Club’s Board of Directors.)
- A special plaque presented to the recipient, with name and date of recognition:
- The inscription of the recipient’s name on a permanent plaque containing the names of all previous recipients. (This plaque is displayed prominently at the Gainesville airport terminal.)
The deadline for accepting nominations is Tuesday, October 29, 2019.
