PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT - ORTON GILLINGHAM
Each week, we will be highlighting one of our programs or offering resources for the Radcliffe community to illustrate The Radcliffe Way!

Radcliffe creates exceptional readers through the use of a scientifically based reading program, Orton- Gillingham. The Orton-Gillingham method of reading instruction developed by Dr. Samuel T. Orton and educator, Anna Gillingham, utilizes phonetics and emphasizes visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning styles.  It is a highly systematic, multi-sensory , synthetic, phonetic approach, which simultaneously builds reading, writing and spelling skills. Instruction begins by focusing on the structure of language and gradually moves towards reading. The program provides students with immediate feedback and a predictable sequence that integrates reading, writing, and spelling.

In Orton-Gillingham classes at Radcliffe Creek School, several different web-based programs to supplement student learning are utilized. The programs that many of our students have subscriptions to for the 2019-2020 school year, are Learning Ally and Lexia PowerUp Literacy . Learning Ally is a human narrated audiobook library with over 80,000 books and textbooks. Lexia PowerUp Literacy is a gamified learning application for middle school students that addresses gaps in fundamental literacy skills while helping students build the higher-order skills they need to comprehend, analyze, evaluate, and compare increasingly complex literary and informational texts. Our younger students are currently piloting a program called Nessy, which is a structured literacy program for children ages 6-11 that was developed at the Bristol Dyslexia Centre by a team of specialists.

All three of these programs should provide fun and exciting ways for Radcliffe families to incorporate reading technology into the home
