A cru Beaujolais bonanza
A quick Google search reveals that enthusiasm for cru Beaujolais seems to have reached a fever pitch around 2017. A succession of exceptional vintages, great quality-to-price ratio and a sophisticated consumer base willing to entertain the notion that wines from this region can be of high quality brought them to the fore. Since then, cru Beajuolais has continued its run of fine vintages, prices have inched up and demand has remained strong, but less intense. The relative abundance of these great wines has enabled us to make some stupendous deals on high-rated wines.
Today we have two 93+-point, old-vine examples from top producers working in two separate crus. These wines represent the pinnacle of Beaujolais production and the Gamay grape variety. As one wine maker in the region said, "Gamay has to be excellent; otherwise it's nothing." Cru Beajolais is as far from generic Beaujolais as Korbel is from French Champagne.
Beaujolais wunderkind Charly Thevenet learned traditional, natural wine making from his father Jean-Paul, who was a key figure in the resurrecting the reputation of the region. Charly farms his 80-year-old vineyard in the Regnie cru biodynamically. He harvests late, sorts grapes aggressively, ages the wine in four-year-old Burgundian barriques, and bottles his them unfiltered. The Thevenet 2016 Regnie received 95 points from Wine & Spirits magazine and carries a retail price of $39.99.
The 2018 Jean-Marc Burgaud Cote du Py represents a landmark vintage for this always exceptional wine. Burgaud farms his 47 acres of of 50+-year-old vines in Morgon traditionally, eschewing chemical fertilizers and insecticides and harvesting by hand. He has no plans to grow bigger, but rather prefers the precision he can accomplish by keeping the domaine small. The Cote du Py, rated 94 points by Robert Parker's Wine Advcate, usually sells for $26.99.
While supplies last, we're offering a six pack consisting of three bottles each of these wines for just $108, or an average of $18 a bottle--a $102 savings. Buy 2 six packs and enter the code CRU at checkout and save an additional 10%. Click here now to get Best Case Scenario Grand Cru #138 at spectacular savings.

Reviews and Press

Burgaud Cote du Py Morgon
Ripe and focused, with very good depth to spicy pear, lemon skin, chalk and tangy nectarine flavors. Well-integrated vanilla oak and salty accents linger in the finish. Drink now through 2011. One hundred cases imported.
