“Once impacts become noticeable, they’re going to be upon you quickly,” said William V. Sweet, a scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Silver Spring, Md., who is among the leaders in research on coastal inundation. “It’s not a hundred years off — it’s now.” - New York Times, September 3, 2016 Photo: Walkway along the Tidal Basin in East Potomac Park, Washington, DC
DCEN BRIEFING: PEW's Flood-Prepared Communities Reducing Flood Risk:
U.S. Success Stories
On Friday, May 1st @ 11:00 AM, join the DC Environmental Network (DCEN) for a special briefing by The PEW Charitable Trust's Flood-Prepared Communities initiative, on reducing flood risk in the United States.

DCEN asked PEW to share their expertise as DC based environmental organizations and advocates are preparing comments in response to the DC Department of Energy & Environment's proposed floodplain regulations. We hope this briefing will help contribute to a broader and more creative understanding as to what's possible as communities prepare for climate crisis flooding.

Background:
"As flood-related disasters become increasingly common and costly, causing more than $845 billion in U.S. losses since 2000, there’s a growing need for action from all levels of government to get ahead of the next storm. To help provide decision makers with a menu of options, The Pew Charitable Trusts examined state and local pre-disaster flood mitigation efforts from across the country." 1

Pew’s Matthew Fuchs, Officer, Flood-Prepared Communities, and Sarah Edwards, Senior Associate, Flood Prepared Communities, will discuss key takeaways and lessons learned from research for a report, Mitigation Matters, that was released last November.

All are welcome. If you participate, we are hoping you will be inspired to send comments to DOEE regarding your thoughts on their proposed changes to floodplain regulations.

Look forward to seeing you soon!
