Register this Earth Day for the
Neighborhood Clean-up Challenge

May 11-17, 2020
With covid-19 and social isolation orders in place, many of us are looking for safe ways to help our communities. We’ve all see online videos showing heroic people saving wildlife from being entangled, impaled, and strangled by plastic bags, six-pack rings, straws, and other trash. You can help remove trash from your neighborhood and prevent it from hurting wildlife, littering your community, and flowing into waterways.
GOAL: Join North Carolina Wildlife Federation, Plastic Ocean Project, and hundreds of wildlife volunteers statewide to collect 5,000 pounds of trash and raise $25,000 to protect, conserve, and restore wildlife and their habitats. An anonymous donor has agreed to match dollar for dollar up to $25,000 and NCWF will plant one tree for every 25 pounds of trash collected.

HOW: You can safely follow social distancing rules and CDC guidelines by wearing gloves and a mask and pick up trash around your community. You can then organize the trash into your recycling or trash bin. Every bag of trash is estimated to hold 20 pounds of trash. If 250 volunteers pick up a bag of trash each and raise $1 for every pound of trash collected we'll reach the goal!

WHEN: You can collect litter and trash around your neighborhood or community every day between May 11 and 17 or just focus on one day that week. Share your progress too! Share a picture of yourself, trash collected, or where you found the trash along with the estimated pounds by either tagging NCWF on Facebook ( @NCWildlifeFederation ) or Instagram ( @NCWildlifeFed ) or email us ( tara@ncwf.org ).

WHERE: Your neighborhood or community. Litter tends to collect along busy roads, shopping centers, waterways, and parking lots. Or maybe you notice it in other places.
WHY: Litter is hazardous to wildlife because they can get stuck in jars, six pack rings can strangle them, they can get entangled in fishing line, and they may eat containers that smell like food. When it drifts out to the sea, animals like turtles and dolphins ingest it. Plastic and other trash in our waterways is also toxic to the environment and our drinking water. Sadly, it is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish .

Your involvement can make a difference. NCWF Wildlife Community Chapters and volunteers collect thousands of pounds of trash every year. Your participation in this Neighborhood Clean-up Challenge can protect wildlife in your community, prevent litter from flowing into your waterways, and keep it from drifting into the ocean.

When you register, you'll receive an email with more information on how to help raise the matching gift funds through your own crowdfunding campaign. You'll also have an opportunity to make your own donation towards the effort as well. Any contribution is appreciated but not required. Hope you'll join the effort today!
