Tlingit & Haida is committed to providing current information on the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic to ensure all tribal citizens remain informed and have the resources needed to stay safe. Below is a brief update from Tlingit & Haida’s Tribal Emergency Operations Center.

CASE COUNT UPDATE

The number of positive resident cases of COVID-19 in Alaska is currently 904 including 21 ne w cases as of June 28, 2020. Of these cases, 88 are in Southeast Alaska (see breakdown below), 132 individuals had a recent history of travel and 772 were close contact, community or unknown. There has been a total of 525 statewide recoveries, 67 hospitalizations and 14 deaths. The total number of non-resident cases is 183.

Southeast AK Resident Cases by Community*:

In Southeast Alaska, there are 17 active resident cases, 66 recoveries and three deaths.

Haines: 2 (1 recovered, 1 active)
Juneau: 44 (37 recovered, 5 active, 2 deaths)
Ketchikan: 21 (17 recovered, 4 active)
Petersburg: 4 (3 recovered, 1 death)
Prince of Wales Island (Craig): 2 (2 recovered)
Sitka: 12 (7 recovered, 5 active)
Wrangell: 3 (1 recovered, 2 active)

Southeast AK Cases by Community*:

In Southeast Alaska, there are 13 active non-resident cases and 11 recoveries.

Haines: 3 (3 active)
Juneau: 3 (3 recovered, 1 active)
Ketchikan: 8 (4 recovered, 4 active)
Petersburg: 1 (1 active)
Prince of Wales Island - Craig: 1 (1 active)
Sitka: 3 (3 recovered)

Cover it Up

The Center for Disease Control and Alaska's chief medical officer recommend wearing face coverings in public settings to help limit the spread of COVID-19.

A cloth face covering may not protect the wearer, but it may keep the wearer from spreading the virus to others.

COVID-19 spreads mainly from person to person through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks, or raises their voice (an example would be while shouting, chanting, or singing). These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Recent studies show that a significant portion of individuals with COVID-19 lack symptoms (are “asymptomatic”) and that even those who eventually develop symptoms can transmit the virus to others before showing symptoms.

COVID-19 Cases Double in Seward as State of Alaska Reports 33 New Cases, Some with Ties to Bars — The number of COVID-19 cases doubled in Seward on Sunday as 33 cases were confirmed throughout Alaska by the Department of Health and Human Services. The Tribal Emergency Operations Center (TEOC) was created to enable Tlingit & Haida to provide timely, integrated, and coordinated responses to the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic that addresses the four phases of emergency management: mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. The activation of the TEOC is not due to any identified cases within the Tribe. All actions are aimed at protecting the safety and well-being of Tlingit & Haida’s citizens, clients, employees and communities.
