August 2021
Photo of the Month
Here's a photo of the milking cows all lined up to check out some new people. Cows are very curious, so when visitors come, the cows are right there to greet them and see what's new. Even though tourists come to see the cows, we think the cows enjoy getting their tour of humans.

Cedar Falls store serving pizza, breakfast sandwiches
Thereā€™s a new pizza in town!

Hansenā€™s Dairy Cedar Falls is serving up hot, fresh slices of pizza for breakfast, lunch and dinner for only $2.99 per slice. Our recipe is a throwback to the days of Papa Dā€™s Pizza in Hudson and Cedar Falls, so you may get a strong sense of nostalgia when you take that first bite.

It pairs really well with one of our milkshakes too, just sayinā€™!

P.S. We've also got hot breakfast sandwiches on biscuits and English muffins, so breakfast is covered!

Waterloo store discontinuing prepaid card program
Hansen's Dairy Waterloo will be discontinuing the use of the prepaid card program on Dec. 31, 2021.

The prepaid card program began as a membership program, where members would get discounts on milk and other Hansen's Dairy products. However, in 2017, we removed the discount for using the card and made the discounted price the actual shelf price for all customers. This was out of necessity to match with the Cedar Falls store, as we had to use a new point-of-sale system there to allow gas station pay-at-the-pump purchases.

Now our point-of-sale system in Waterloo will undergo an upgrade, and the prepaid program will not be feasible anymore. Waterloo customers will still be able to use up any money on their card, but will not be allowed to reload any money onto the card, effective immediately. Any unused funds on the card as of Dec. 31 may be cashed out and returned to the customer.

Thank you for your understanding.
Customer of the Month
The August Customer of the Month is the Aurand Family of Waterloo.

Kristen Aurand said the family has enjoyed Hansen's products for a long time.
"My mom would take us to Hansen's and then take the girls to the farm. I remember getting the milk when we were little," Kristen said. They frequently shop at the Hansen's Dairy Waterloo store, near their home.

Kristen loves that the products are fresh, local, and of great quality.

"We've never had a bad experience, and the staff is friendly," she said. "We love to get our ham for Easter!"

She named hard ice cream as a family favorite, with the Brownie Sundaes, Strawberry ice cream and waffle cones at the top of their list. They also enjoy the milk, pulled BBQ pork, Gouda cheese, string cheese, heavy whipping cream and eggs.

Thanks, Kristen! Customers of the Month receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores and two free hands-on tour passes to the farm (a $30 value). You could be chosen by filling out an entry form at our stores or through your comments on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
Cow of the Month
The August Cow of the Month is one of our older cows, and she rules the roost.

Midnite was born Dec. 18, 2012, so she's turning 9 this year. She's had seven calves in her lifetime.

As you can see, Midnite is mostly black. Farmer Blake has noticed that mostly black or mostly white cows tend to be a little stronger-willed than their more evenly black-and-white-spotted peers. Midnite has been around a long time and is pretty stubborn. Don't try to change her routine, or she will show you who's boss. But since she is nearing 200,000 pounds of total milk production and is still going strong, we'll let her do her thing!
Cooking with Hansen's
Zucchini is one of the most versatile and plentiful vegetables out there. It takes on the flavor of whatever it's cooked with, making it ideal for sweet or savory dishes and an easy way to get an extra serving or two of vegetables. These Zucchini Taco Boats are sure to please everyone around your table.

Also, did you know Aug. 8 is National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Day? If you've got an abundance of this vegetable, leave your zucchini and a copy of this recipe for your friends to find!

Zucchini Taco Boats
Prep time: 20 min
Bake time: 20-25 min
Total time: 40-45 min
Servings: 4-8
Ingredients
  • 1 lb. Hansenā€™s Dairy ground beef*
  • Ā½ tsp cumin
  • Ā½ tsp coriander
  • 4 medium zucchinis (8-10 inches long)**
  • 1-2 cups Bongards shredded cheddar cheese*
  • Kramerā€™s Salsa*
  • Ā½ medium onion, chopped (optional)**
  • Ā½ medium bell pepper**
  • Country View Dairy sour cream
*Items that can be purchased at Hansenā€™s Dairy Stores
**Items that can be purchased at Hansenā€™s Dairy Stores in season
Directions
  • Preheat oven to 400F.
  • Brown ground beef in a medium skillet on medium heat, chopping to form fine crumbles.
  • Add cumin and coriander to ground beef while it is cooking, incorporating well.
  • While meat is browning, cut zucchini lengthwise and scoop out the middle, creating a "boat." (A melon baller works great for this. You can also save the flesh for other recipes like zucchini bread or muffins, or add to compost.)
  • Chop the pepper and onion into small chunks.
  • Place the boats on a parchment-lined cookie sheet.
  • Fill boats with browned and seasoned meat.
  • Top with salsa, green pepper, onion & cheese.
  • Bake at 400F for 20-25 minutes.
  • Remove from oven.
  • Top with sour cream, salsa or other toppings of your choice.
  • You will probably need to cut up boats and eat with a fork instead of picking them up with your fingers. Enjoy!
