Ask a Middle School Counselor
by Counselors Gretchen Brandt and Kent Downing, Valley View;

Q: How will my child's relationships with their friends change as they enter middle school? How can I be supportive?
A: As parents, we may remember our own middle school years. Some of us loved them, while others would never want to repeat them! It is developmentally typical for friendships to change during middle school.

In fact, we would anticipate that it would naturally happen. Sometimes it can feel like a crisis for the student, but eventually they grow new, and sometimes better, friendships as they branch out and meet new people. Click to read more

Preparing for middle school over the summer
by Margaret Trenda, SVMS parent and EHS teacher
The summer before sixth grade, our daughter attended the e-learning Boot Camp to get her device and to learn about the expectations regarding technology in middle school. Academically, we didn’t have a lot of concerns for her going into middle school; however, we talked with her about having multiple teachers and classes.

Since my husband and I are both teachers, we emphasized the importance of communicating with those teachers in order to ask questions and get help. Our daughter’s biggest concern was the size of the building and getting lost. We looked at a map of South View so that she could get an idea of where things were. It was helpful to look at the map once we got her schedule so that she could visualize where her classes were. Click to read more
Study habits - Be creative and fun with summer learning
It is hard to believe, but summer is here! This is a great time for students to fill in missing gaps, get a jumpstart on the next school year, and continue their overall learning.

Learning over the summer doesn't have to, and really shouldn't, look like traditional school. Summertime is a wonderful opportunity to try new things, explore different learning styles, and develop school confidence. Click to read more

Technology Update
Boot Camp provides information about safe tech use and more
All incoming sixth grade families will attend a Boot Camp session before a district Chromebook will be provided. Boot Camp provides information to students and parents about appropriate technology use at home, troubleshooting, and an overview of Infinite Campus, Schoology, and other Edina apps.

Boot Camp dates are tentatively set for July. Watch for more information.
