ALL MY FAVORITE PEOPLE ARE BROKEN
REV. FLORENCE CAPLOW, JULIE LAUT AND OTHERS
Sunday, October 13, 2019 at 10:15 a.m. in Sanctuary
Mental illness is still one of our great taboo subjects. Our language is filled with pejoratives about mental illness: "crazy, insane, loony." But there is little serious discussion. Yet almost all of us are touched by mental illness in some way, through our own life or the lives of loved ones. In this sensitive service, we will explore the difficult subject of mental illness with compassion. For a video description of the service, click

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS
REV. FLORENCE CAPLOW AND DR. MICHELE GROVE
Sunday, October 27, 2019 at 10:15 a.m. in Sanctuary
This Sunday service, in honor of the October birthday of St. Francis, will be a celebration and blessing of animals, both our companions and the wild ones. The service will be held in the Sanctuary, and you can bring your pet (on a leash or in a carrier please), or, if your pet is shy, you can bring a photo to be blessed. Kids, you can even bring your favorite stuffed animal! All are welcome and all will be blessed (even people, since we are animals too).
A part of this worship service will honor animals who have touched our lives. Animals that are still living and those who have died are included in this honor. Please send photos of animals that have touched your lives to Blake Preston,
re-assistant@uucuc.org. If you can also list your name and the name of the animal, it would be greatly appreciated.

UUCUC AS A PLACE OF HOSPITALITY FOR IMMIGRANTS
Standing with
the UUA’s and other congregations’ beliefs in immigrant justice, in September, our Board of Trustees passed a motion approving a plan for UUCUC to be a place of hospitality for immigrants. According to the motion, UUCUC will be able to host immigrants in the safely of our church for periods of 3-5 days when it would not be safe for these immigrants in their own homes, in coordination with a local organization, Three Spinners.
Providing hospitality to immigrants in our church will require MANY volunteers. We’ll know more particulars soon, but for now, if you would be potentially interested in volunteering in some capacity if and when we host immigrants, please
fill out this form to give us your name, email, and contact phone.

UUCUC’S RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COUNCIL
Learning is a lifelong endeavor and a valued part of our Unitarian Universalist community. A council is a larger structure which oversees a multi-faceted program. Since religious education is a large program, then participants in the council will collaboratively work to organize, dream and make it happen!
In the next year, there will be more opportunities for children, youth, adult and multi-generational learning opportunities thanks to the work of the new Religious Education Council. This new council will:
- Coordinate and resource existing programs in partnership with staff.
- Dream of the future and plan for new programs for this year and years to come.
- Develop leadership
- Look at policy and procedures for education at UUCUC
- Work with other UUCUC and community committees and groups to heighten learning experiences.
The RE model is set to include all who are interested. If you would like to learn more about this new council, here are 3 things you can do:
- Watch this PREZI presentation which animates the new structure: https://prezi.com/view/Tsondekk8lSfCNMNyvfX
- Reach out to the RE Council chair, Barbara Hudgings, (hudginba@gmail.com) or Interim Director of Religious education, Michele Grove (re-director@uucuc.org). We are happy to answer questions!
- Plan to attend our next RE Council meeting on Saturday, November 16th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY
National Coming Out Day emphasizes that homophobia thrives and survives in a climate of silence, and that a personal form of activism is to visibly assert your identity if you are a member of the LGBTQ+ community. October 11th is a day to remember the importance of the gay rights movement and to hold the many members of our family, friends, and colleagues who are in this community in our hearts, whether or not they are out.

YMCA Friday Forum: Affordable Housing for Whom?
Friday, October 11, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. at the University YMCA in Champaign
The vast majority of “affordable housing” programs target households with incomes at or above 50% of median income, leaving only a tiny amount of money for the lower income households who need the most help. Esther Patt looks at the housing challenges faced by low-income households from lack of affordable housing, limited aid, and discrimination based on conviction record, source of income and children.
Co sponsored by UUCUC’s Social Action Committee, this lecture is part of the Fall 2019 Friday Forum Lecture Series, “Womxn Rise Up.” For more information about the series,
