In the April issue of the Sixteenth Notes, York Harmony Chorus was missed from the congratulations extended in North Metro's article. It should have read, " We applaud all those who competed, especially the winners - S.L.A.M.!, Ontario Heartland, and York Harmony." We apologize for the error.
Quartet Corner
Spring - a time for new growth! Are you planting some quartetting seeds? Maybe considering starting a quartet? Or maybe channeling your energy in your current quartet? The post-competition period is an exciting time to act on all those ideas.

The Quartet Workshop on June 8 at Durham College in Oshawa offers the perfect opportunity to cultivate your quartet garden. Mo Field will bring her magic to all who attend, whether you are in a quartet or dream to be in one. Find out how to weed out bad habits and to fertilize better
ones.

If only three of your foursome can attend, you will still be offered a free hour of coaching. The classes all day will give you tools to move forward. Two lucky quartets will be  chosen by lottery for Mo's demonstration coaching session.

An educational event for quartetters is only able to be offered every few years so COME! Design your quartet landscape. You only have until May 28 to register.

See you there!

Wanna quartet?

Did you know that the Region 16 website has a page called Spare Parts? If you would like to get working on starting  a quartet, go to that page to both enter your own information for others to see OR have a look regularly to check  out who might already be on the page who is also looking for  a quartet.

There is great information on th e Spare Parts page: Each person's name and location, contact information, what part they sing, how far they are  willing to travel to be in a quartet, etc. You don't have to know the person be forehand to meet for coffee to discuss the possibilities.

NOW is a great time of year to do just that. PLUS! You both could sign up for the Quartet Day on June 8! If you DO eventually form a quartet, please let us know, and remove yourself from the Spare Parts page, whether or not you decide to register on the Sweet Adelines Int'l website.

S.L.A.M.! Quartet

What a Weekend!

S.L.A.M.! Quartet would like to sincerely thank the Region 16 convention team, judging panel, and all of YOU for making our dreams come true in Syracuse a few weeks ago. We had a blast, and were thrilled and honoured to be named your 2019 quartet champions!

One year ago, we spent a weekend together at Linda's cottage, relaxing, having fun and just being best friends, which we do pretty well! We sang a little for the fun of it, felt the old buzz of ringing chords.... and then wondered if we might re-enter contest one more time, after a three-year hiatus. During the three years off, we'd all been on quite the journey: we collectively kicked cancer's butt, endured seven major surgeries, lost two Dads, shared a big wedding, built a new house, became Canadian, and were blessed with two new grandkids and a cottage! But, with all of that more settled, we thought: why not go out and sing on our favourite stage, for our favourite people!

We loved our time preparing together, and at the moment the curtains drew back, and the lights hit, we felt the magic! You were all so supportive, the energy from the audience was stunning and almost knocked us off our feet! You lifted us up and reminded us why we do what we do, sharing joy through our music. THANK YOU!
We are so excited to be heading to New Orleans in September and hope to represent Region 16 with as much gusto as we can! If you would like to follow our journey to New Orleans, we have a facebook page: www.facebook.com/slamquartet. Beignets and café au lait, anyone?

And finally, your cards, gifts, supportive words and donations have been so very much appreciated. We thank you for your part in our journey!

With love,

Stephanie, Linda, Annie & Martha

Limestone City Voices
The Chord Father and the LCV Gangstas are back after a four-year hiatus and our goal for 2019 is to make sure the joint is jumpin' when we take part in the Harmony Classic Competition at the SAI International Convention and Competition in New Orleans in  September, 2019. Special thanks to all our singing sisters at the SAI Region 16 Regional  Competition in April for their enthusiastic support and comments after we presented our package on stage and during the afterglow sessions.

On the weekend of February 15, we had an amazing coaching session with our coach and
dear friend Mo Field. During the retreat, LCV welcomed five new members to the chorus - two
of which are very new to barbershop. Our new members are: Dawn Diamond, Anna McGrath, Denise Kingsbury,  Jill Childerhose, and Faye Hoadley.

While celebrating our new sisters in song, we also want to take a moment to wish a fond farewell to outgoing members Bev Horlin, Pat Cyr, Brianna Howson, Mo Field and Amelia Charnock. We love you and are so glad you've been part of the LCV clan!

On March 30 we had the opportunity to perform two shows in Ottawa with the men
from BHS's Capital City Chorus. It was a fun night for everyone and we hope to perform together again in the future.

The next few months include lots of fun: Intense rehearsals as we prepare for New
Orleans,  competing in  the Harmony Area 5 Competition in May, and various fundraising opportunities, including  our  Links with Limestone City Voices Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 1 at Camden Braes Golf and Country Club near  Kingston at 1:00 pm. It will be an 18-hole shotgun start. Entry fee: $125 per  person (includes golf, golf cart, dinner) and a chance to win prizes! Join us if you can!! We'd love to see you there.

Bytown Beat Chorus

2019 has been a great year to date for Bytown Beat Chorus of Orleans. We were all resolved to work hard and make our mark at Regional Convention. Knowing it would be the last convention in Syracuse, it was important that our farewell visit there end on a high note.

Part of the preparation for competition was a coaching session with Sandie Nason at our retreat in Cornwall. We spent a weekend there in February at the Nav Can Centre and found it to be a welcoming and comfortable venue, something we are very likely to repeat in the future. We benefited from great coaching, ate very well, maybe too well!, and had an amazing variety of entertaining skits for our Saturday night party.

Our Family and Friends night was enjoyed by all of us and it wa s most encouraging to hear all the positive comments at the reception afterwards. They sent us off to Syracuse feeling confident. We disappear to practice every Monday night but they don't complain and are always there to support us. Who could ask for anything more?

Syracuse was, as always, a great weekend of singing, friendship and lots of fun. We were very happy with our performance and our marks, though we are not finished yet and have plans to improve in every way before the next convention rolls around. Here's to continued success in St Catharines.

The chorus is very busy right now preparing to put on a show in November at the Centrepointe Theatre in Nepean. We are learning new music and our show committee is working towards the production of what we hope will be a successful outcome. Mark November 9 on your calendar and come on down!

Orangeville Show Chorus
Orangeville Show Chorus is on the move! We recently left the Orangeville Agricultural Centre due to some unforeseen changes and are now rehearsing for the summer at Lord Dufferin Centre Retirement Residence in Orangeville. This is like a homecoming for lots of the chorus members as the chorus rehearsed there previously for six years. LDC provides a phenomenal 'rental agreement' as, in lieu of rent, the chorus will be doing a concert for the residents on the last Wednesday of
Lord Dufferin Centre
each month. This was a great deal and the chorus only moved on due to space limitations when more risers were purchased. On this part of the journey, it will include rehearsing on flat floor, as space for equipment is still an issue, but this is outweighed by the joys of singing for the seniors and the cost savings for the chorus.
Westminster United Church
At the end of the summer, the chorus will be moving to the newly-renovated auditorium at Westminster United Church located 'on Broadway' in Orangeville, a perfect location for singers! We hope this will be a lasting partnership with the church and look forward to this next chapter in chorus life.

The chorus recently said farewell to long-time members Judy Paterson, Sylvia Lichti and Marie Rizzuti, who are moving on to new places and opportunities. And the chorus welcomed new bass Leslee Sjouwerman. A mix of emotions with comings and goings.

The chorus is preparing for our annual appearance at the Orangeville Blues & Jazz Festival on June 2. The day before, the chorus is hosting another Acappellooza workshop at Lord Dufferin Centre, inviting young folks in the community to learn four-part harmony and then sing on the programme the next day. A learning experience and great fun for both groups!

The chorus has also been invited to take part in a Theatre Orangeville production of A Midsummer Night's Dream being held August 22-25 at the outdoor Amphitheatre at Island Lake. Many professional and non-professional folk, young and old, will be taking part. This is a dream of Artistic Director David Nairn who says, "This is a dream of bonfires and fairy lights. A dream of magic and wonder. A dream of a community celebrating each other." The chorus looks forward to the fantastical world of Shakespeare and the adventure that awaits!

Circle of Harmony
It's  been a whirlwind couple of months for the Circle of Harmony, with our Spring Show followed by our last contest in Syracuse. Syracuse will be a tough act for St. Catharines to follow, running so smoothly for so many years, but we look forward to seeing our sisters in harmony in our new venue in
Front Row at contest!

Canadian Showtime Chorus
Our chorus continues to move forward in leaps and bounds thanks to the commitment of every person on our Management team and our Director.

We have just completed our Annual General Meeting led by our Team Coordinator, Nancy Mantle, who works side by side with Belinda Boekhoven, our Chorus Program Coordinator, and our Director, Joe Connelly. Were it not for these extraordinary leaders who work tirelessly with our Management Team and music leaders, the Chorus could not have achieved such an effective transition year. Together, they have set the governance model, budget and plans that will carry us seamlessly through our next phase to New Orleans, and beyond!

To support our continued transition and to sustain these efforts, we have committed to supporting a variety of events to raise funds. Join us for a riverboat cruise and performance, New Orleans style, on June 9 (see poster below). We will also be holding our Annual Gala Extravaganza on Sunday, December 1, 2019. Stay tuned for further details.

A very successful textile fundraiser was organized by Nora McEwen. Not only did we receive $835 for our old clothing and materials, we avoided 4,175 kilograms of recyclables from going into the landfill! CSC is committed to reduce, reuse and recycle!

We continue to build trust and relationships within our community! How very proud were we to have been asked to sing the National Anthem at the 67s playoffs first game!

No one can predict our future, but it helps to know that the Captain and crew at the helm of this ship are the very best!

North Metro Chorus
May 8th was a memorable evening for the chorus as founding member,  Sarah (Sadie) Moore, who passed away recently after a brief illness, was remembered in a beautiful ceremony. Members shared stories of her wonderful sense of humour and remarked on how much she was loved.

The room was filled with both laughter and tears  as we spok e about how she had left us an enduring legacy !

Joining us were many guests and former members who came to honour Sadie.  The evening was followed by the installation of  North Metro 's 2019/2020 Board of Directors.

Next week, we will return to our normal rehearsal schedule as we continue to prepare for our upcoming show, which takes place on October 5. Visit our website for more details.

Wishing you all a great summer - stay safe and sing well.
Bay of Quinte Chorus

HAVE THINGS REALLY CHANGED
OVER THE YEARS?

Bay of Quinte Chorus, Sweet Adelines
Belleville, Ontario

In 1973, a men's barbershop chorus was formed and the wives of the members came to sing with the Quinte  Belles Chapter. At that time, many of the Quinte Belles' members were service men's wives.

Unfortunately, these members had husbands who were subject to frequent transfers. Other women  came from different backgrounds and had different musical knowledge. Yet all had something in  common - they loved to sing and be challenged by the barbershop style.

Over the years, many directors came and moved on, the rehearsals were moved to different locations,  but the women didn't care. They were singing in the style that they loved - barbershop!  They loved to perform as a chorus, with top-notch quartets and with the men's chorus, The Trentones.

These performances were at retirement homes, special events such as the "Wintario" microwave  cooking demo, fall music school and even competition each spring. A special memory was when our  chorus received 2nd-place in our division in the 1980s.
I wonder! Have things really changed?

Faces do change with new members, new directors. Rehearsal halls do change as we strive to  accommodate. The name of the chorus has changed to the Bay of Quinte Chorus. But the love of singing a  cappella, barbershop style, has never changed.

The Bay of Quinte Chorus has a new director, we are growing the membership and we are performing at  events - our fashion show in a couple of weeks, festival of trees and retirement homes at Christmas  time. I am proud to continue to be a member of Bay of Quinte Chorus, singing with joy in my heart.

Great Fun!

June Moorcroft
