BAY FLIGHT 2019 Set for Saturday, October 26th
Plan now to join us in October for the Bay Area's General Aviation conference - BAY FLIGHT 2019. The one-day conference brings together pilots, controllers, industry leaders, and educators to share what's happening now in general aviation, and will again be held at the Seaport Conference Center in Redwood City. Organizers are already booking exciting topics and compelling guest speakers for the event.
 BAY FLIGHT is a celebration of Bay Area aviation, and will include topics of particular interest to local pilots, such as local airspace procedures, local weather patterns, and recent Bay Area accidents and incidents. SCFC Partners with EAA 20 for Young Eagles in June
San Carlos Flight Center and EAA Chapter 20 in San Carlos are partnering in support of the Young Eagles program. SCFC pilots do a lot to support the community of general aviation and we plan to show up big on June 15th to give new flight experiences to younger pilots. Join us, and be the one to ignite the passion for aviation in a young person's soul.

Meet the Upwind Class of 2019!
On March 15th at the San Carlos Flight Center, the Upwind Foundation announced the Upwind Summer Scholarship Class of 2019. The four recipients this year are Jackson Collins of Mountain View, Ashton Hacke of Half Moon Bay, Ben Son of Fremont and Megan Stretch of San Mateo.

These high school students will start a nine-week, intensive ground and flight training program in the middle of June. When you see them at the Flight Center, say hello and offer them words of encouragement. The scholarship program is made possible by donations from the San Carlos Flight Center community.

Cessna T210 - Ready, Set, Go!
 You have been patiently waiting but you won't be disappointed. The Cessna Turbo 210 is fully ready for members to fly. With its bigger payload, higher service ceiling and faster cruise speed this makes the perfect trip for this summer's cross-country adventure. Want to know what you need to do to get checked out in the T210? The minimum pilot qualifications are 300 hours total time, 10 hours of complex time and a minimum of 5 hours in T210 time.

Equipping the Fleet with New Emergency Checklists
Safety is a top priority here at the Flight Center, and we are always looking for ways to help our pilots fly safer. In an effort to provide better in-flight support, we are working to populate the fleet with emergency checklists. They will be sized
to about 8 x 8.5 inches and are marked with a red stripe to make them easy
to identify.
All of the airplane's POH Chapter 3 emergency checklists are
included on the cards with prominent headings, such as Engine Failure,
Fire, Electrical System Failure, etc. As this is our first effort in this area, feedback from our pilots is greatly appreciated to ensure the format is as helpful as possible.
The checklists are already placed in the Turbo Centurion and Turbo
Saratoga. Look for the new checklists to begin appearing in the Cessna
172s shortly, followed by the rest of the Cessna and Piper fleets.

FOG's First Trip to the Western Airplane and Automobile Museum
Even though FOG is meant to be for VFR trips, when the weather is IMC, the IFR guys still may go. This trip to Hood River Airport, about 45 nautical miles east of Portland, turned out to be fascinating for IFR pilots. Headwinds, clouds, rain and mountain waves throughout Oregon made this trip interesting and a great learning experience for IMC flying. At the end of the flight, we found a treasure of vintage airplanes and automobiles from the early 20th century, all still operational, making this trip is a must for your bucket list. We will be returning.
For mountain waves to form, the atmosphere must be unstable below (air wants to rise) and stable above (air wants to sink). The air below rises over the mountain, boosted up by the unstable layer of atmosphere then shoots up into the stable layer and wants to sink. This overshooting causes the air to cool and form clouds and when the sinking air dissipates, the clouds form standing lenticular clouds. The top of the unstable layer is marked by the top of the underlying stratocumulus layer being held down by the above stable layer. The more unstable the lower layer and/or the less stable the upper layer the more chance of turbulence and vice versa. And don't forget to stay far above the mountain tops (at least 2500 feet above) to decrease the chance of getting caught in downdrafts!

 SCFC: Congratulations on passing your Private Pilot Checkride! Who (or what) inspired you to become a pilot?
JK:
I have been passionate about aviation my entire life. My great grandfather founded the Santa Paula Airport (KSZP), and I am one of four in the 4th generation of private pilots. My grandma got my brother and I into flying lessons when we were teenagers. We would visit her in Santa Paula for one week every summer from the age of 13, and I soloed in a 150 when I was 16. After a brief 16 year hiatus, I soloed again last October at the age of 32.
SCFC: Who was your lucky first passenger?
JK:
My girlfriend. We flew down to Watsonville to pick up my dad for a birthday flight around Santa Cruz
(my 2nd passenger)
. We landed in Hollister for lunch and had a great day.
SCFC: What's next on your aviation goal checklist?
JK: Lots! I have several trips planned including a Mountain Flying Course in June. I plan to get my high performance and 182 sign off shortly after that. I'm also trying to expand my aviation network and would like to meet other pilots to go on trips with and share learning experiences.
SCFC: What are your hobbies outside of aviation?
JK:
Running, camping, ping pong, and hang gliding - though t
hat one's
not really outside of aviation...

FOG Visits the SFO Tower
One of the regular FOG events is coming back, the SFO Tower Tour. In the past, FOG worked with the SFO Tower staff to schedule tours. Pilots doing Bay tours are frequently told to contact San Francisco Tower on 120.5 and often wonder who these people are and what do they do. This tour is a great opportunity for pilots to see firsthand the complexity of the SFO tower operations and to take in the breathtaking view from atop of the 12-story tower. The Flight Center has reestablished the relationship with the SFO tower and is setting up scheduled tours. The first tour was in March, with others to follow soon. The number of people for a tour is limited to four people due to the confined quarters in the tower. The next few tours will be facilitated with an SCFC CFI and 3 other students. Look for future tour dates as the process gets streamlined.

FOG Pilots Invade Santa Maria
March 30th was a blast as FOG pilots toured Santa Maria Wine Country. FOG makes the trip to Santa Maria every year, and tries to vary the wineries included on each trip. This year's wineries included Riverbench, Roblar and Tantara.
Our designated driver, Dave Kramer, said, "OMG I was surprised even for  someone with little interest in wine how much fun I had hanging out with this group. It was non stop laughs. Also we could literally taxi up to the Radisson at KSMX. I will definitely return next year." Be sure to watch out for this trip next spring so you can join in on the fun!

FlyOutGroup: KCNO and the Greater LA Area
May 10-12 (Fri - Sun)
 Join FOG as we fly down to the greater Los Angeles Area, one of the densest and most populated airspaces in the country. If you can fly here, you can fly anywhere. Our base will be Chino Airport, Home of the Plane of Fame Air Museum & Yanks Air Museum as well as one of the largest and most interesting ramps. You will find almost everything and anything in the parking areas from modern general aviation planes to WWI & WW II American and Russian aircraft. It's one of the most interesting and leisurely afternoon a pilot can have.
Enjoy a weekend going at your own pace to see really cool planes, a relaxed, interesting, fun airport, and have good food all while flying the most interesting airspace west of the Mississippi.

Full Moon Flyers to McClellan Airfield
May 18 (Sat) 7:00pm
May 18th is the Full Moon night, with this month's full moon being known as a Full Flower Moon. This name is in recognition of the flowers that bloom during this month. This month, the group will be flying to McClellan Jet Services FBO for pizza and drinks at Sacramento's McClellan Airfield, home of the McClellan Airtanker Base. This is an awesome night flight to a large untowered field in the Sacramento area/airspace . The runway is wide and long so no pressure there.

 Join FOG for a Sunday Brunch at Seabrisa's Eatery at Hollister Airport, just a short walk on the ramp. Enjoy the camaraderie with fellow pilots and family and make sure your weight and balance accounts for the fact that you will be stuffed to the max after a wonderful meal. Then back home for that lazy afternoon Sunday nap.
KCVH is a beautiful airport located south of Silicon Valley and east of the Monterey Area, two of the most beautiful areas in California. Gliders are based out of this airport as well so this will be a great review and exercise on sharing the aerodrome with them.
