Administrator's Corner

Finals are right around the corner.  Students should be attending class every day and working with their teachers during Office Hours for extra help if needed.  In addition, Finals can be stressful for students.

Please talk with your student about being prepared for their Finals:
  • Get plenty of rest the night before
  • Eat a healthy breakfast
  • Wear layers (in case you get warm or chilly)
  • Come prepared with test materials (i.e. pencils or whatever your teacher communicates)
  • Stay positive!  A test checks your current knowledge on a subject, but it does NOT indicate what kind of person you are or measure your worth - just study and do your best!
Click here for the finals schedule.

Important announcement for seniors!

Staff Appreciation Picnic
The end of the school year is quickly approaching so it's time to come together one last time before summer to say THANK YOU to the wonderful staff at TJHS for all that they do for our kids. TJ's PTO will host a staff appreciation luncheon on  Friday, May 24th  from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm in Room 111.

We are getting ready for summer by hosting a picnic themed lunch. The PTO will provide the fried chicken, but we need parents to sign up to contribute classic picnic side dishes, desserts and drinks. Please help us make this end of year celebration a great one by contributing to the lunch in any way you can. If you are not available on the 24th, click here to donate. Any amount helps!

Please be sure to write Teacher Appreciation in the comment section during check out so we know what the donations are for. You can also bring in check or cash donations to the office by May 22nd.

Dropping Off Your Food Donations On Friday, May 24th, drop off your item in room 111 between 10:00-11:00 am.  If your item does not need to be refrigerated, you can drop it off in the main office kitchen on Thursday before 3pm. We have plenty of serving utensils so no need to bring any of your own.
The staff truly appreciates your support. We know life is crazy this time of year, but we can't do this without your help!  Thank you in advance for your generosity!

With gratitude,
TJ PTO

Mental Health and Social/Emotional Tips
Did You Know?
All schools work to prevent school violence and schools are very safe places. Children, staff, and parents all have an important role in promoting school safety by following procedures and reporting concerns. It is also important to balance sufficient building security with a healthy, nurturing, school environment. The goal is to reassure students that although there is a possibility of violence occurring in a school, the probability of a school experiencing a high-profile violent act is extremely low.

What to Say to Children
Talk with children and validate their feelings. Let their questions guide what and how much information to provide and emphasize the positive things that children/families/schools can do to stay safe. It is important to be patient as children do not always talk about their feelings readily. Watch for clues that they may want to talk, such as hovering around while you do the dishes or yard work or visiting your classroom during passing periods or after school. Some children prefer writing, playing music, or doing an art project as an outlet. Young children may need concrete activities (such as drawing, looking at picture books, or imaginative play) to help them identify and express their feelings.

Be aware of signs the child might be in distress (e.g., changes in behavior, anxiety, sleep problems, acting out, problems at school or with academic work). Also be conscious of media exposure and what you say about the event in front of the student. Also limit television viewing (be aware if the television is on in common areas) as this can exposure students to frightening images which only increase anxiety.

Following are some suggested general key points when talking to children:
  • Schools are safe places. Our school staff works with local police and fire departments, emergency responders, and hospitals to keep you safe.
  • Our school is safe because....
  • We all play a role in the school safety. Be observant and let an adult know if you see or hear something that makes you feel uncomfortable, nervous, or frightened.
  • There is a difference between reporting and tattling, or gossiping. You can provide important information, either directly or anonymously, that may prevent harm by telling a trusted adult what you know or hear.
  • Although there is no absolute guarantee that something bad will never happen, it is important to understand the difference between the possibility of something happening and probability that it will affect you or our school.
  • Senseless violence is hard for everyone to understand. Providing children with opportunities to do things they enjoy, sticking to a normal routine, and being with friends and family can help students feel better and keep them from worrying about the event.
  • Access to guns is one of the leading risk factors for deadly violence. Thus, it is important that children be kept away from guns and other weapons. It is equally important that children be encouraged to tell an adult if they know someone has a gun.
  • Students can be part of a positive solution to school violence by participating in antiviolence programs at school, learning conflict mediation skills, and seeking help from an adult if they or a peer is struggling with anger, depression, or other emotions they cannot control.
Helpful Guidelines to Keep in Mind

Keep explanations developmentally appropriate.
  • Early elementary school students need brief, simple information that is balanced with reassurances that their school and homes are safe and that adults are there to protect them. Give simple examples of school safety that remind children about exterior doors being locked, child monitoring efforts on the playground, and emergency drills being practiced so they are prepared if somethings happens.
  • Upper elementary and early middle school students will be more vocal in asking questions about whether they truly are safe and what is being done at their school. They may need assistance separating reality from fantasy. Discuss efforts of school and community leaders to provide safe schools and provide concrete examples.
  • Upper middle school and high school students will have strong and varying opinions about the causes of violence in schools and society. They will share concrete suggestions about how to make school safer and how to prevent tragedies in society. Emphasize the role that students have in maintaining safe schools by following school safety guidelines (e.g., not providing building access to strangers, reporting strangers on campus, reporting threats to the school safety made by students or community members, etc.), communicating any personal safety concerns to school administrators, and accessing support for emotional needs.
Parents Open communication between home and school is critical to the safety and well-being of our students and your children. Let us know if you have a concern or question about school policies, your child's safety, or the safety of their friends. Know if your child's friends have access to guns and keep any guns in your house locked up and away from children of all ages. Focus on building resiliency and coping skills to manage disappointments and help your child be comfortable seeking help from an adult they trust.

As a reminder , we have a wonderful, responsive resource we can access if we are worried about the safety of someone or the possibility of acts of violence:

To penetrate this code of silence, Safe2Tell Colorado initially was founded as a 501c3 non-profit organization, incorporated to develop a statewide anonymous reporting tool available 24-hours a day to accept reports whenever a Colorado youth or concerned adult perceived a threat to their safety or the safety of others."
We are encouraging all staff, parents, students and community members to put this resource in their phone. Here are three ways you can access this program:

        1) Use the Mobile App
        - search Safe2Tell CO

        2) Make a report on the Safe2Tell Website
        - https://safe2tell.org /

        3) Phone a tip in using the Safe2Tell phone number

Class of 2019 - Seniors
Class of '19 update:  Thank you Class of '19 parents and supporters for a great year!
Class of 2020 - Juniors
As we look ahead to Senior year, we need several parent volunteers to take on the planning and execution of the Senior night camp out before the first day of school for incoming freshman (Aug.19).  This is a great TJ Spartan tradition. We would especially love to have some dads help out with this event.   If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Megan Perkins ( [email protected] ) or Lisa LoJacono ( [email protected] ).
Class of 2021 - Sophomores

We're looking for volunteers to host future events for our class parents. If interested, please come to the next PTO meeting, or send an email to [email protected]; or [email protected] to find out more.

Class of 2022 - Freshmen
The class of 2022 needs 2-4 additional parents to join parent Julie Rubin in planning fundraising events. The class of 2022 has two faculty sponsors,  Jason Klimczak and Maggie Kennedy, but parents are needed to work with the staff to plan fundraising activities. Parent sponsors also plan community building activities for the parents of the class of 2022.  Each class is expected to raise money needed to host their Prom, After Prom and other activities senior year.  The sooner the fundraiser get started, the more choices there will be for events senior year. The time commitment can be as little or as much you can share.   Your involvement in any capacity is important and appreciated. We are successful because of your behind-the-scenes contributions, large and small. It all adds up to a stronger community. An engaged parent body shows our students that we care about them!

If you need more information, contact [email protected] or Julie directly at [email protected].
