Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Fed Data Prospector (Vol. 3, Issue 34). We hope you all are enjoying the Summer Olympics and getting your fill of swimming and gymnastics! Much like the Olympic athletes toiling away for years in their respective countries – hoping and praying for that chance, once every four years, to shine -- your team here at Carpe Datum is working equally hard. However, in our case, your satisfaction, ongoing readership, and sharing of our weekly publication to friends, family, and colleagues is truly our Gold Medal!

In other data news, on July 26th, ProPublica published a fascinating and very germane story entitled, How Unemployment Insurance Fraud Exploded During the Pandemic.  In the article, the author, Cezary Podkul, describes inside the infrastructure of perhaps the single largest fraud wave in U.S. history -- State Unemployment Insurance. Fraudsters have filed in high volumes, sometimes obtaining payments from multiple states, despite the fact that a jobless person is barred from getting assistance in more than one state.

  • “ID.me’s chief executive, Blake Hall, made headlines last month when he told Axios that he thinks taxpayers’ losses from UI fraud will top $400 billion. Hall defends that estimate, which some commentators criticized as wildly inflated. Hall based the figure on the precipitous drop-offs in new claim applications that states have experienced after implementing ID.me verification. In New York, for instance, state data confirms that new claims for PUA fell by 89% after ID.me went live in late March. And more than 50% of people who have already filed for UI benefits don’t even try to confirm their identities when asked to do so, according to Hall, who cited data from five states the company has worked with.”
