The Wild Side: Toothed Ones
Did you know that dragonflies belong to the order of insects called
Odonata, which means
"toothed one" in Greek? Dragonflies are predators and will prey on anything they can catch. Dragonflies are aquatic in their larval stage and they will prey on the larva of other insects, like mosquito larva for example.
Dragonfly nymphs are very beneficial in helping to control mosquito populations. Dragonfly nymphs will also eat tadpoles, fish, and they may even eat each other! An adult dragonfly's diet will include many species of insects. The adult dragonfly catches its prey during flight with its legs!
Are you looking for an awesome educational opportunity for your kids this summer, that's also a whole lot of fun? Why not sign them up for our Dragonfly Detectives Mini-Camp, from July 22-25, where they can learn more about these amazing creatures? Dragonfly Detectives Camp is for children ages 9-13 years old. The cost is $80 per camper. This camp is co-sponsored by the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. Visit our
website
