The environmentally friendly campus of Lake Superior State University looks even greener thanks to a recent donation of more than 300 trees by the Superior Watershed Partnership and Land Conservancy (SWP).

A crew of four young adults from SWP’s Great Lakes Climate Corps (GLCC) spent a week planting 339 carefully chosen and strategically placed saplings across campus: 200 white spruce, 85 maple, 32 chokecherry, 12 white oak, and 10 eastern white pine spanning the central heating plant, the Fletcher Center, the row houses, and the Center for Applied Science & Engineering Technology. Great Lake State Weekend will be held on October 15 & 16, 2021. Festivities will include the kick-off of the University’s 75th anniversary. This will be the overarching theme for the weekend. On Friday and Saturday, we will operate a Welcome Center at Lukenda Alumni House to greet alumni and friends. There will be an array of academic open houses and the career fair on Friday afternoon.

We are excited about a new format for the Alumni Awards scheduled in the Arts Center on Friday prior to the Laker Hockey game. The Lakers will be opening their CCHA season against the St. Thomas University Tommies, the newest addition to the CCHA, for a two-game home series.

On Saturday, join us for Admissions activities, a fun run and a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of LSSU’s Nursing Program. There will be a reunion and open house at the Superior Simulation Center. There will be five inductees into the Laker Athletic Hall of Fame this year occurring Saturday afternoon followed by the Women’s Walk for Women’s Athletics. The walk will culminate with the “Pre-gamer on the Courts” social on the outdoor tennis courts prior to Saturday night’s Laker Hockey game.
WRAPPING IT UP
As another beautiful July is coming to a close in Laker Country we are looking forward to a beautiful August followed by September which can often provide some of the best bonus weather of an EUP summer.

Here in our office, we already have our sights excitedly set on October and inviting everyone back to campus after a “Covid-hiatus” to celebrate Great Lake State Weekend (GLSW) and kicking off the beginning of the year-long celebration of a 75th anniversary at LSSU.

GLSW will be held on the weekend of October 15 to 17, 2021 when we will be honoring the best of our best during the Alumni Award celebration on Friday followed by the Athletic Hall of Fame induction on Saturday afternoon. There will be a number of academic open houses, the GLSW Monster Mash 5k Run offered by the Kinesiology Club and a new spin on the tailgate called the “Pre-Gamer on the Courts” prior to Saturday night’s Laker Hockey game. At that game you will witness the WCHA Championship banner being raised to the rafters of Taffy Abel Arena. For more information on GLSW please visit the LSSU Alumni website.

I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer wherever you are. When summer wraps up, we look forward to gathering here again on campus enjoying all GLSW has to offer and the 75th celebration of all things Lake State!
