Unpack & Unwind

Lodging choices abound...we've got everything from restored farmhouses to slopeside townhomes to Artist designed cottages to country style B&B's.

The Kirby Compound  is centrally located between Burke and Lyndonville.  Built by local Artists, craftsmanship and creativity shows inside and out.  The private, 40 acre property offers 3 rentals.  The one bedroom cottage was once an art studio and features windows all around.  The apartment has 2 bedrooms (plus a futon and room for blow up beds), a wood stove and full kitchen.  There's also a cozy loft available to rent.

You'll feel like a real Vermontah at the Farmhouse at Kingdom Farm Lodge.  Built in the 1800's, the farmhouse offers lots of charm and room for 6 with 3 bedrooms and a full kitchen.  It's located on a dirt road in East Burke, just minutes from the slopes, fat biking, VAST trails and local restaurants.

Burke Vacation Rentals manages dozens of properties in and around Burke.  Whether you prefer a slopeside townhouse, country cabin, multi-bedroom house or a condo, they have something to suit your needs including properties with all kinds of amenities from fireplaces to gear storage to kitchens fit for a chef.

If you prefer a village stay and want to wake up to the smell of the best donuts around, check out Hollyberry's B&B.  Two guest rooms are available and rates are just $90 per night.  Come morning, a continental breakfast featuring Holly's famous baked goods awaits.

Deal of the Month

Try something new this month like AromaTouch Technique available at Trail2Wellness. What is it, you ask? It is the application of doTERRA CPTG (certified pure therapeutic grade) essential oils to the back and feet following specific guidelines and instructions for dosage and application. Eight different oils are applied using hand techniques designated for each oil. The oils used have calming, immunity, anti-inflammatory and invigorating properties.  If you schedule an appointment for AromaTouch Technique during the month of March, the price of the session will be $30 instead of $40, a savings of 25%!   Call or text Janice at 802-274-2130 or email [email protected] to schedule an appointment.

All Things Maple

Nothing says Vermont like Maple Syrup and sugaring season starts soon!  Of course, it's great on pancakes, but we celebrate maple all  year round and in all kinds of ways up here.  Heck, you can even get it in lip balm!  Contact Karen at Sweetwater Studios to get yourself some hand-crafted maple flavored balm.  For an ultra dose of the sweet stuff, pick yourself up some maple bourbon, salted maple caramel, maple mocha and even maple bacon flavored truffles from our local chocolatier, Burke Mountain Confectionery.

Cooking with maple is almost as much of a tradition here as tapping trees.  Let's face it, it's good in pretty much everything!  To create your own conc octions, you need to start with the good stuff direct from Vermont.    Don-Sim Farm  and  Firefly Farm  both produce, sell and ship syrup out anywhere.  Various grades and sizes are available.

Locally produced syrup is a staple in every chef's kitchen up here and lots of restaurants feature it in at least a couple of menu choices.  You gotta try the sugar shack poutine at Burke Publick House.  Hand cut fries topped with gravy, cheddar, chorizo, bacon and maple syrup!  How much more Vermonty can it get?  You can even order a maple old fashioned cocktail to go with it.

Up on Darling Hill Road, Juniper's offers several items with amber gold including burgers topped with maple glazed bacon, grilled pork chops with maple apple relish, fried chicken & waffles and a hanger steak m arinated in juniper berries & maple syrup.  Of course, for dessert, there's maple cream pie!

Located along Lake Willoughby, Gil's Bar & Grill at the WilloughVale Inn offers a coffee-rubbed, maple-glazed strip steak and Faroe Island salmon in a crispy tempura served with smoked maple soy dipping sauce. Fresh salads come with all kinds of Vermont in them including heirloom apples, maple spiced nuts, cob smoked bacon, and Bayley Hazen Bleu cheese.

Up on the mountain, you can stop into The View Pub for Sunday brunch and enjoy your syrup on French toast or flapjacks,  Later on, stop in for dinner and enjoy butternut squash ravioli served in maple sage cream sauce.  You can even enjoy some maple on the slopes.  Friday through Sunday, look for  Chris Parker from Making Maple serving samples, making sugar on snow and selling maple products.

As you're driving around later this month and into next you're bound to smell maple in the air and see steam rising from the sugarhouses.  We're friendly folk up here and most people don't mind if you pull over and stop in to learn about the tradition and maybe get a little taste of the amber.
