Exciting Announcement: SoCalREN Kits for Kids Program
The new SoCalREN Kits for Kids Program introduces fourth-grade students from participating schools to energy efficiency! Students perform an interactive scavenger hunt and play games to learn how they, and their families, can save money and improve their comfort and safety at home. Each kit will include two LED bulbs, one efficient-flow showerhead, and two faucet aerators. If 65% of students install the energy-efficient items and provide proof of installation, enrolled classrooms are eligible to receive a $1,000 grant.

How it Works

  • Schools and teachers receive information about the Program, and teachers enroll their classrooms at socalren.org/kitsforkids.

  • Students take home their kits with energy-efficient items, installation instructions, and educational activities.

  • Once families have installed the items, students will return their installation verification cards to their teacher, and classrooms can receive up to a $1,000 grant.

This new Program provides great benefits to students, teachers, and families by informing them about the importance of energy efficiency. Learn more at socalren.org/kitsforkids or email us at kitsforkids@socalren.org.
ReEnergizing Communities Episode Two: Upcoming Energy Efficiency Policymaking
SoCalREN’s second podcast episode was just released on upcoming energy efficiency policymaking. Hear from Kurt Johnson, Advanced Community Energy Manager at The Climate Center, as he joins host Chris Ford to discuss his organization’s work, structuring energy efficiency-related policy at both the state and federal level, and how the state of California can become more energy resilient. Other topics include Kurt’s work on the EPA’s Green Power Partnership Program and the status of the Community Energy Resilience Act in the State legislature.

Public Agency Programs
Keeping the Focus Local with Regional Partnerships
SoCalREN is proud of its collaboration to prioritize a clean energy future with its five regional partners—Gateway Cities Council of Governments, High Sierra Energy Foundation, San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments, San Joaquin Valley Clean Energy Organization, and South Bay Cities Council of Governments. The collaboration brings no-cost support for energy, demand, and water-saving projects to agencies across Southern California—from the high desert to the Sierra Nevada Mountains!

With support from these partnerships, SoCalREN has welcomed 38 new agencies to the network; engaged with agencies in over 50 presentations; launched a virtual three-course energy efficiency training series; and delivered critical energy services, such as energy analysis reports, facility audits, and benchmarking. We would like to thank our regional partners for committing to ensure their local agencies have access to energy efficiency and distributed energy resource services—especially those supporting low-income, rural, and disadvantaged communities.

Residential Program
Big News: The SoCalREN Multifamily Financing Program Is Here
The SoCalREN Multifamily Financing Program offers convenient ways for building owners to access funding for energy-efficient equipment installed through the SoCalREN Multifamily Program. Our Multifamily Financing Program offers your customers the opportunity to fund equipment through an Energy Service Agreement—equipment is paid for using future savings and allows your customers to fund their projects without incurring debt.

We recently held three training sessions that allowed Participating Contractors to get acquainted with the new Program. If you were not able to attend one of the training sessions, a recording of the session is available here. Additionally, marketing materials describing the funding offer will be distributed to Participating Contractors, free of charge.

New Project Incentive Estimation Sales Tool
The Multifamily Program has been working to create a new and convenient tool designed to help estimate project incentives. This Project Incentive Estimation Sales Tool, which has been added to the contractor website under Program References and Resources, will be particularly effective during initial sales conversations with customers to help showcase the benefits of participating in the Program. Please reach out to your Account Manager if you have any questions on how to locate and utilize this new tool. (Note: The tool shows only an incentive estimation and should not be considered as a final incentive.)

Workforce Education and Training Program
With the new Workforce Education and Training (WE&T) Program Contractor Program Resources pages, discover the tools created specifically for Contractors participating in the Program.

The SoCalREN WE&T Program provides training, tools, and opportunities for minority participants in Disadvantaged Communities to pursue careers in energy efficiency. Contractors who elect to participate in the WE&T Program can expect to participate in the five general steps: enrollment, training, coaching, bid support, and project support.

Program Services for Contractors

  • Independent business assessment. Contractor meets with a Technical Assistance Specialist for a virtual one-on-one overview to discuss their company and goals.
  • Unique coaching plan. Based on the independent business assessment, the Technical Assistance Specialist will develop a coaching plan to assist contractors with navigating SoCalREN opportunities.
  • Select the right path. Based on qualifications, contractors will have the opportunity to select a public sector or residential path, or other avenues within the energy-efficiency construction sector.
  • Specialized training. Contractors will receive personalized training in line with the coaching plan developed by the Technical Assistance Specialist.
  • Bid document review and support. Contractors will work with a Technical Assistance Specialist during the bid process to review for accuracy and compliance.

Heat Pump Training Course
The WE&T Program and SCE will be holding a heat pump training course for Participating Contractors on Tuesday, July 20. The training, which will examine heat pumps during retrofit construction, is available to HVAC contractors, distributors, product manufactures, and more. During this course, participants will learn about the value and benefits of HVAC heat pumps and heat pump water heaters. There will also be a research presentation on industry updates to heat pump technology.

Topics discussed include:
  • California’s decarbonization goals and how heat pumps help achieve them.
  • First costs of HVAC heat pumps are lower than HVAC gas split systems.
  • Operating costs of HVAC heat pumps are lower than HVAC gas split systems, especially when using SCE’s TOU-D-PRIME rates.
  • Technical features and various configurations of HVAC heat pumps, including central, ductless, and ducted.
  • How heat pump water heaters work and why they are so efficient.
  • How to sell and install heat pump water heaters.
  • How to help consumers maximize their savings potential.
  • How to take advantage of available incentives.
