THE BACK OF THE NET
Director Message:
A common question that is asked throughout the year from parents and coaches is "What should I be looking for when watching my child, or my player, on the field?" It is a great question and something we should be thinking about when watching a soccer game and practice. We tend to focus on how a team is doing as a whole, so we can miss some of the great things players are doing individually. When watching a player on the field, here are some things Classics Eagles Director, Tony Earp, suggests to look for.... and it is not exactly what you think.

MEET CLASSICS EAGLES RED DEVILS

Classics Eagles U10 Girls Team Red Devils is coached by Justin Turner. This is a very hard working group of girls who really enjoy playing together and having fun with one another. When they step on the field, there is always a combination of laughter and sweat! Dedicated to improving their individual skills with the ball, all of the players attend the weekly supplemental skill training Classics Eagles provides. MAKE A DECISION

Soccer has no patience for indecisiveness. Soccer will not wait for uncertainly to fade or allow a player to over analyze any situation on the field before making a decision. Soccer is extremely impatient and it expects a player to make choices immediately and often. Any hesitation or second guessing will be punished with a loss of possession and mounting frustration. The game rewards confidence. Confident decisions, right or wrong, gives the player the opportunity to be successful or the opportunity to learn and get better. When a player makes no decision, not only will he lose possession of the ball, but there is nothing to be gained or learned... well except that next time a decision needs to be made.  Read more!

The Importance of an Emergency Action Plan

One key component to ensuring the best possible medical care for athletes is to have an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) in place for each and every sports venue. It is standard practice for Athletic Training and Sports Medicine departments at all levels to have an action plan in place in case of an emergency.

Tory Lindley, MS ATC, who serves as President of the National Athletic Trainer's Association, recently contributed an article in the USA Today High School Sports section about the importance of EAPs. He discusses what an EAP is, and their importance in,  "providing a quick, appropriate and coordinated response in the wake of an injury." Click here to access the full article.

EAPs are designed to be  venue-specific, identify personnel involved and their roles, the communication process, emergency equipment location, transportation guidelines, response time, and more.  A venue specific EAP should be easy to find, define who is in charge of the situation, outline the chain of communication, list of equipment needed, directions to the venue/injury site, and a plan for where to transport the injured athlete.

At Orthopedic ONE, we have EAPs in place at all facilities and venues where we provide Sports Medicine coverage.  As a coach or parent, please feel free to approach our athletic trainers on duty about the EAP in place.  If you are comfortable and able, it may be of great help to assist in response efforts with the athletic trainer if a situation should arise.

While it is not possible to have all games or training sessions at the club sports level covered by medical personnel, it is important for parents and coaches to be as prepared as possible to handle a situation if one occurs. Consider preparing and implementing an EAP of your own based on these tips, and feel free to speak with our athletic trainers for guidance.
