Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration Special Edition
May 7, 2019

Greetings!
The month of May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM) , a time to celebrate contributions made by Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and reflect on what it means to be a part of the AAPI community. In honor of APAHM, the National Association of Asian American Professionals is hosting a variety of events to honor AAPI heritage and continue to promote AAPI excellence and leadership.

 President's Message

Spring Greetings! NAAAP Detroit Members and Friends!

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM) is celebrated annually in the United States during the month of May. On October 5, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution proclaiming the first 10 days in May as Asian Pacific Heritage Week. In 1990, President George W. Bush signed an extension making the week-long celebration into a month-long recognition. In 1992, the month of May was officially designated as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month by law. May was chosen because it commemorates the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States in 1843. May also marks the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 which was work performed by many Chinese immigrants.

National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP) celebrates APAHM in many states and in many ways. Locally in Michigan, NAAAP Detroit will join other Asian community organizations to attend the Asian Pacific American Day at the State Capitol on May 9, 2019 to meet our State Legislators and Governor Gretchen Whitmer, to celebrate the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

Please join us at Lansing, Michigan this Thursday!
