MALMessage from Member at Large, Jessica Wildfire

Jessica Wildfire
Greetings SACSA Members,

I hope your semester is winding down nicely. As one of your Members-At-Large (MAL) on the Executive Council I have the privilege to serve you in a variety of ways.

One of my responsibilities for the last year has been to partner with our other Members-At-Large to develop a central volunteer database. This process has been lengthy, but also enlightening as we have learned about all the wonderful work that is being done across the Association throughout the year. We are in the home stretch of this expansive project and hope to have a database live online by next month.

As you begin to think about where you will spend your time and energy next year in terms of professional development, I encourage you to find ways to connect with SACSA outside of the Annual Conference. There is a plethora of opportunities waiting for you. As much as we continue to need SACSA for the development and connections, SACSA also needs YOU!

I look forward to continue serving you and hope you are able to step away from your campus this summer to relax, reflect, and refuel.

In service,

Jessica Wildfire

Dr. Johnny Young
SACSA Member since 2012
Dr. Johnny Young, a member of SACSA since 2012, is the Associate Vice President for Student Engagement and Enrollment Services at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. Dr. Young has 7 units that report to him, including: the Women's Center, Intercultural Relations, Student Health Services, Counseling Services, Career Development, Military Connections and Educational Accessibility. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration from the University of Michigan - Flint, his Master's of Public Affairs from the University of Michigan Ann-Arbor, and his EdD in Curriculum and Instruction from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

He describes SACSA as "one of the best things that has happened to me professionally", noting that he has met many ambitious and committed people in SACSA. His involvement in SACSA has included being a reviewer for conference program proposals, helping to host SACSA at ODU, and is this year's Poster Session Coordinator.
Mentorship is important within SACSA, and Dr Young makes time to mentor younger professionals and mid-managers within the organization. Old Dominion University is also committed to bringing students to SACSA, each year bringing graduate students and undergraduate students to learn more about the field. They are now professionals in their own right, says Dr Young, and they describe how much they learn from the experience of SACSA.

His favorite SACSA location was Myrtle Beach! His favorite SACSA memories are dinners with his VP colleagues. The group picks a location each year to reconnect. He describes the group, which includes longtime SACSA members Dr. Ellen Neufeldt and Dr Joe Buck, as "great, committed people". The camaraderie keeps him coming back to SACSA, noting he enjoys the chance to reconnect with colleagues at each SACSA!

Faculty, practitioners and graduate students are invited to share innovative solutions, new research, and current trends addressing best practices in collaboration, partnerships and experiential learning related to one or more the following topics:

· Diversity, Equity, Inclusion
· Mental Health
· Accessibility
· Research and Assessment
· Mentorship
· Academic Partnerships

SACSA program proposals will be accepted in the following formats:

Concurrent Sessions - A traditional 50-minute breakout session. Presenters are encouraged to use creative and engaging techniques to interact with the audience.

Lightning Round Sessions - 3 presenters from various institutions or departments within the same institution will present on a common theme (i.e. initiatives addressing gender issues on campus, best practices implementing Title IX, etc.). Presenters will have 10-minutes of presentation time, sharing how they address the common theme in their department/position and/or at their institution. Following the third presenter there will be 10-minutes for Q&A with all presenters. It is encouraged for you to connect with colleagues across and outside the region to submit a joint proposal. You may also submit individually for a Lightning Round option and the conference committee will match proposals accordingly.

Poster Session - Presenters will utilize graphs, diagrams, pictures, data, handouts, and narrative text to form an exhibit of either completed or in progress research. *The Poster Session will take place in conjunction with the Involvement Fair during the conference.
