Anxious parenting is an optimization economy with no upper limit, which turns every second of a child’s life, in and out of school, into a commodity.

How to Grant Your Child an Inner Life
|
"As my children get older, I’m realizing how profoundly my instincts have been shaped by this culture of constant supervision, which wants to believe that it’s the same thing as intimacy. I still prefer it, over all, to the enormous distance that I sometimes felt as a teen-ager toward my parents. But I want to ask: Who is speaking up, today, for a young person’s right to a private life, to secrets, unshared thoughts, unmonitored conversations and relationships?"

Kevin Durant credits his mother, Wanda--who raised Kevin and his brother as a single parent in Washington, D.C., on a postal worker's salary--for showing him how to rebound from setbacks. He saluted her as "the real MVP" during his 2014 NBA MVP acceptance speech.
"At one point, when I was working overnight shifts, Kevin asked me, 'How long are you going to keep working like this?'" says Wanda Durant. "It was hard on him and his brother, too. But I told him, 'It's what I have to do to make sure we're OK.' He understood."
