Y Updates from Mike Melstad
|
|
Greetings!
As I am writing this it is a spectacular day outside and in a way that is what I am here to discuss with you. My starting point is that not enough of us, and particularly not enough of our kids are getting outside in a meaningful way. Too many kids are playing sports and doing things in a virtual bubble – on smart phones - and are steadily walking away from doing real things outdoors. Yes, outdoors is hot or cold, humid or dry, buggy or windy, and the water is dark not clear. This can be challenging, but when we fill our lives with experiences that are not real I am very fearful that we’re going to lose touch with the real consequences of real actions on our fellow citizens. For instance, I do believe that blowing people up in video games likely makes it easier to blow people up remotely. An extreme example maybe, but there are a lot of people getting injured and killed nearly every day. We know of one great way to get kids away from this virtual stuff and into nature and community with their peers and positive caring adults.
Get a kid to Camp for a week. When a kid arrives at Camp the second or third thing that happens is their smart phone goes in their parent’s pocket for the week. Most of the kids act like they have lost their best friend and go into a mini shock routine. It is profoundly upsetting to today’s kids to see that phone leave Camp. But do you know that for the most part that dislocation and loss lasts about half an hour. I’ve watched it be replaced by these kids getting to know other kids, listening to stories about their lives and beginning to explore this new world that is built entirely to develop and maintain those new and renewed relationships. We don’t just have to accept that today’s kids are permanently ruined by their device dependence – if we create the right setting and build in an exciting bunch of fun – these “new” kids will connect with each other and experience peak kid Camp moments just like kids have been doing since the YMCA invented Camping in 1885.
As difficult as having a large resident camp may be, I want to assure you that we do camp precisely to create what is happening to those phoneless kids – teaching them how to build strong positive relationships in a positive setting guided by counselors we select to be role models and leaders. We don’t do Camp to teach high level skills – we do camp to build those relationships and help kids with their most important developmental task at Camp age. They are forming peer groups with people they will relate to perhaps for the rest of their lives in a positive setting that is built around people being their best, instead of the many other less worthy choices out there.
So why am I nagging you about this? I'm doing it to suggest to you if you have a kid within reach who is lost, bored, spending the summer with the TV or frankly watching bad videos over the internet consider sending them to Camp. Can be your own kid or Grandkid, can be another relative’s kid it can be neighbor kid down the street who’s headed for trouble – there’s one on my block I‘m going to try to get to Camp Pepin. It really is the gift that keeps on giving – consider it – you won’t regret it.
Mike

Are you a local business owner or know someone that is? We have the Banner Program so businesses can promote their company by displaying a banner here at the YMCA. There are many benefits to being a part of this program.
* Your investment in the Banner Program ensures we can continually support those who would not otherwise be able to access the facilities and programs we offer.
*You are expressing to the community that your business supports the health and well-being of our area’s children, family, and seniors.
*The Banner Program keeps your business in front of the community 7 days a week. We have over 5,000 members, and over 1,000 of them participate each day.
*These banners are rotated quarterly so your business name is displayed throughout different parts of our building.

SAFETY AND SECURITY UPDATES
|
|
The YMCA is updating its security procedures so we are asking all members and program participants to be registered in our computer system and use a key tag to enter the building. This will take a bit of work on the front end, but in the long run will make entry easier for all and ensure a safer surrounding for everyone who enjoys our YMCA.
What you need to know:
· If you are not a member of the YMCA, but participating in a program you will need to complete an application.
· If you are a member of the YMCA, but you have family members who will be entering the facility in order to pick up a child or watch a program, those non-members will also need to register.
All paperwork will be given out as registration takes place. You will have time to complete the paperwork and return to the YMCA at least a week before the program is set to begin.
Our staff are more than happy to help you with any questions.
Thank you for your time and patience as we move forward.
