Better Hearing & Speech Month

y is Better Hearing & Speech Month and this can be an especi
ally good time to let the public know how much
your
program does for young children and their families. Specifically, your hearing screening efforts deserve to be in the spotlight.
Many people are now familiar with how important newborn hearing screening is, but what they don't know is that the number of children with hearing loss doubles between birth and the time children enter school. Unfortunately, most children across the country do not have the benefit of hearing screenings during early childhood. This means that when a hearing loss occurs, it is likely to go unrecognized until the child enters school and has a hearing screen. This lag in identifying potential hearing problems puts a child at high risk for language delays.
With that in mind, the fact that your program regularly provides timely hearing screening and follow-up to the young children enrolled in your program des
erves to be recognized!
We encourage you to take this opportunity to remind your own community and other professionals that May is Better Hearing & Speech month, and - at the same time - to remind them about the unique contribution that your hearing screening program makes to the health of families in your local area.
We have a few tools on our Spread the Word page that can assist you as you:
- Send a handout to colleagues about how high-quality hearing screening can be done and urge them to pass along this information for parents.
- Contact local media, give them the handout link listed above, and explain the value of the screening you provide to children enrolled in your program. We've also created a Press Release Template that you can edit and use for this purpose. (The template describes Otoacoustic Emissions hearing screening, but if your program is using Pure Tone screening for children 3-5 years of age, you can easily modify the text.) If you have any 'parent stories' to add, where you have helped children get the follow-up they need, those can be of special interest to the media. Your local television station may want to actually film a child having his/her hearing screened (with the parent's permission, of course).
