Letter from the President
We are well under way into 2019. The year started with a General Meeting at Pat Warren's studio where we announced Krista Heron's and Devore Safran's reelection to two more years as Secretary and Vice President. We just had an interesting and informative tour of CBS (Coatings by Sandberg) in February. It was followed by a tour of Favorite Things: Glass from the Collection of Arlene and Harold Schnitzer at the Palm Springs Museum and Austin Art Projects in Palm Desert. Thank you to Marti Blair and Jon Simpson for putting these tours together. More events are in the planning stages, so look for email blasts and check our website.
The Art Glass Guild's Patio Sale is coming up in May 11th and 12th. Stop by and support your fellow artists.
The AGASC Board met on Feburary 24th and decided we are going to hold our next General Meeting on Sunday, June 9th at Kathleen Mitchell's studio at Bread & Salt in Barrio Logan. We plan on having some kind of educational activity accompaning the meeting along with information about our upcoming Gallery 21 show. So, mark your calendars and plan now to attend our next meeting.

AGASC Tour of Coatings by Sandberg
By Jon Simpson
In February, 26 members and guests of the AGASC travelled to Coatings by Sandberg (CBS) in Orange county. We were all amazed by the beautiful dichroic glass in the Museum of Dichroic Glass (MODA) that greets you when you first walk in. We were met there by Dana Baldwin who gave us a tour and answered our many questions about how dichroic glass is created.
When we were through looking at the glass in the museum Dana took us into the production room. Here the 19" circular clear and black glass are prepared by going through a thorough washing to remove all oils and fingerprints. When the glass is dry, they are placed in one of the two dichroic chambers by the technicians. A laser beam is shot at the bottom of the chamber where the quartz crystal and metal oxides are located. They are vaporized and float up in the vacuum chamber and adhere to the glass. One of the most interesting things about dichroic glass we learned is that all of the colors are applied in the vacuum chamber from the same quartz crystal and metal oxides. The different colors are created by rotation of the glass or no rotation and how long the glass in kept in the chamber. The patterns are created by attaching the glass to different wire hangers to achieve the desired pattern.
When Dana was through with her tour she called out "Dichro Sale" to the group and took the sheet off of a large table that was covered in dichroic glass. The table was supplemented by two rooms (90 COE and 96 COE) of dichroic glass sheets, quarter sheets, 4" squares, tubes of dichroic frit, stringers and noodles. We all scrambled looking for bargains. Thirty minutes later, the line to pay was shrinking and everyone was very happy with their purchases.

Tour of Austin Art Projects
and the Palm Springs Art Museum
by Jon Simpson
In March members of the AGASC went to Austin Art Projects in Palm Desert and the Palm Springs Art Museum to see the exhibitions they were having. At Austin Art Projects we saw numerous amazing works by Lino Tagliapietra, Oben Abright, David Willis and Toots Zynsky. We also got to meet Christian Hohmann who bought the building and is a fixture in the Palm Desert art world.
After a relaxing lunch we headed for the Palm Springs Art Museum for a docent led tour of "Favorite Things: Glass from the Collection of Arlene and Harold Schnitzer." It was a display of a wide variety from their collection. The Palm Springs/Palm Desert tours are ones that seem to never disappoint.

AGASC Tour of Two Glass Blowing Studios in North County
By Jon Simpson
In April we met at Nottingham Art Center to see Paul Counts at Nottingham Art Studios and have a demo. It started with Paul and our own Ann Mitchell pulling cane. It was quite interesting, especially preparing the gather and rods for the cane. After that Paul would make one of his trademark teapots for us. It is amazing to see how the teapot is made, from the murrini in the pot to the base, spout and handle. When it was complete everyone applauded and thanked Paul and Ann for the great show.
After a quick lunch it was on to the next stop James Stone's
Stone and Glass. We were met at the entrance by James' wife Carol. There was a gallery gift shop in the front room and we all looked at the glass. James started the demo with a short talk about his life and the glass threads that run through it. He explained that he would be making a shadow vase inspired by Garry Cohen (a north county glass blower and his first instructor who had passed away last year). Near the end James stopped and showed us the vase and how the embellishments cast shadows. We all applauded when he was finished with the piece. We chatted for a bit and soon said our thank yous and goodbyes.

An American in "Paris" Whanganui
By Kathleen Mitchell
Connections and reconnections at the GAS conference on Murano in 2018 led a group of Americans to hatch a plan to attend the 2019 Ausglass/NZSAG conference. As the time to register and book tickets neared, one by one the group dwindled. In the end, I was the lone wolf.
Undeterred, and in pursuit of an adventure, I decided to go it alone. I signed up for the conference, selected a workshop, booked flights and Air B&Bs, and smiled as my credit card bills came in reflecting the favorable conversion rate for the U.S. dollar. I left San Diego on a Sunday evening and woke up in Auckland Tuesday morning. Too early to check in to my accommodations, I headed straight to Monmouth Glass Studio.
Co-owner Isaac Katzoff and I had blown glass together for years in California and I was excited to finally see his studio and meet the rest of the team. It was a pleasure to hang out for a few hours watching Isaac, the exceptionally bearded Steve Bradbourne, and the vibrant Kate Rutecki craft the signature work for the production line of Monmouth Glass. The very next day the shop was a man short so they called me in to work with them and I was blowing glass in New Zealand!
As a glassblower you can go anywhere in the world and easily fit into a team. Ours is a physical language. A gesture, a nod, a tapping of the shears...these are all forms of communication in a hot shop.
Then it was off to Whanganui! Six plus hours on the road, countless sheep and cows, the occasional alpaca, some pretty good roadside diner food and there we were. The hustle and bustle feel of Auckland melted into the serene charm of this town.
I typically go to GAS conferences which can be chaotic and frustrating. The more intimate Whanganui conference made it easy to attend the lectures, panels and demonstrations of your choosing. Topics presented were relevant and interesting and sparked many discussions later in the day. The social activities were top notch. Kicking things off with the Powhiri in the rain established a connection to the location, the people, and the history of Whanganui. From the day at the beach, with rustic glassblowing and the treasure hunt, to the stunning home, vistas, food, and entertainment of the closing party these guys did things RIGHT.
Following a day off to go Op shopping (we call it thrifting) workshop classes began. I signed up for glassblowing with master glassblower Rich Royal at New Zealand Glassworks - Te Whare Tuhua o Te Ao. I immediately loved this facility. Organized and accommodating; Scotty Redding runs a fantastic facility. The buoyant Philip Stokes and the scintillating Miss Katie Brown were our TAs, assisting students of all skill levels. Our class learned and laughed and bonded. I feel I've made new friends for life.
Thank you all.
I love you - Aroha ahau ki a koe.
