This Sunday in Worship from Pastor Darren:
As August begins there are several things happening this Sunday. We will begin offering child care for ages preschool and younger during the 11 a.m. service. We will celebrate the Lord’s Supper at both services. We are blessing backpacks for the new school year, so bring your backpack, briefcase, or satchel. And I begin my August sermon series, “The B-Listed Bible Characters,” starting with Balaam. (Listen for the connection with Shrek.) There’s lots going on. Join us!

Mission and Outreach
Sunday Is Deadline to Donate to School 43 Uniform Drive
Mere days remain of the School 43 Uniform Drive, as the deadline is this Sunday, Aug. 1. So far we have lots more shirts than pants, so we need more pants (khaki, blue, grey, or black). We also need underwear, socks, and belts. More information on sizing can be found on this list. We are also collecting gently used uniform items, as the school puts these to good use. You can drop the clothing off at the church in the receptacles that are placed at the north and west entrances.
You can also shop on this Amazon website and have clothing delivered to Phyllis Groth at 8026 Dean Road, Indianapolis, IN 46240. If you have any questions please email Phyllis. If you don’t have time to shop you can send a check made out to North United Methodist Church, and in the memo write “School 43.”
We appreciate your support.

Next Farmers Market Is Tomorrow;
Can You Volunteer to Help?
The third session of the 2021 North Church Farmers Market is tomorrow, Thursday, July 29, from 4-6:30 p.m. We always need volunteers to make the market a success. You can help set up in the morning or afternoon, assist customers at the market, or tear down after we're finished. You can volunteer for every market or just once or twice. Use this sign-up genius link to get more information and to sign up. Please email Carolyn Svirsky or call her at (812) 340-9996 if you have any questions or prefer to sign up that way. You can also contact Lydia Shaw.
If you know of anyone who might be interested in becoming a vendor, please ask them to contact our market manager, Megan Sullivan.
Our most recent market on July 15 attracted 13 vendors and community organizations:
Produce: Azaila Farm, Harker Family Farm, Flanner Farms, Mother Love's Garden.
Baked Goods and Drinks: A&M Catered Baked Goods, CIBO Catering and Events, Legal Beans Coffee Roasters and Tea's Me Community Cafe.
Hot Foods: Rosie's Riblets.
Body Products: Body Eclectic Skincare.
Community Organizations: Indiana Immunization Coalition, BU Wellness Network, Indianapolis Public Library (College Ave. branch).
The market had nearly 90 WIC customers with purchases from the four produce vendors. There were several SNAP/P-EBT transactions totaling $55 that were matched 1:1 with the FreshBucks program for an additional $55 spent at the market. Fifty-six North coupons ($3/coupon) were redeemed with the vendors. The Indiana Immunization Coalition provided several vaccinations at the market and those individuals received a $5 coupon to spend with any market vendor. Our produce vendors also accept Senior Farmers Nutrition Program checks.

United Methodist Women
'Pushout: the Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools'
|
In the spotlight this week is the book "Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools," which is one of the books North's United Methodist Women members are studying this year.
Despite increased attention to the mass and over-incarceration of black men, the plight of criminalized black women and girls is overlooked, under-reported, and under-analyzed. Monique W. Morris's "Pushout" shows how even with obstacles, stigmas, stereotypes, and despair, black girls still find ways to breathe remarkable dignity into their lives in classrooms, juvenile facilities, and beyond, and challenges the rest of us to do the same.
You can find the book in your local library or purchase it through this link.

Thanks and a Reminder About Recycling Newsprint
Thank you to everyone who donates recycled newspapers to Silly Safaris via Lauren Warbinton! Please remember to remove advertisements, coupons, and glossy inserts. The ink in these items are harmful to the animals. Remember the collection bin is located under the trapezoid-shaped table outside the custodial office in the basement. Again, thank you for your recycling and support of the animals!
