From the Desk of the Executive Director
May 9 th  is National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. At A Child’s Haven (ACH) our work is more behavioral health than ever before. Team members in our group treatment rooms are Bachelor Level or higher employees and our parent engagement staff are Licensed Master’s level clinicians. We have found that investment in early intervention must be multi-generational hence we provide in-home Family Therapy to reinforce the individual and group therapy children receive at our treatment center. ACH provides these services to help us move closer to our vision where all children in our community are thriving with families that nurture their success.

The ACH staff is committed to providing effective and sustainable therapeutic services to families and their young children with developmental delays. To commemorate National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day, team members were asked to finish the phrase, "I stand up and soar for children’s mental health because…." Team members responded with statements like: “It is important to empower & speak up for these kids!” “I want to break the stigma of mental health.” “Kids are the future and the future is shaped by the kids of today.” The responses were incorporated into a bulletin board display in our lobby so everyone can see our team’s passion for the children and families we serve.

Other exciting News -
ACH was reaccredited for three years through the Commission of the Accreditation of Rehabilitative Facilities (CARF) in the following domains: Intensive Family Based Services – Child & Adolescents. Governance Standards applied.  This status requires significant effort, strong teamwork, and commitment from everyone on our staff. We are proud to attain this accreditation for the second consecutive term.

ACH is looking for new team members who have experienced in infant early childhood mental health. Ideal candidates are SC licensed and experienced with young children and families. Open positions, including Child and Family Therapists, are posted on our website, www.achildshaven.org/careers .

Melanie was a single mom raising her son, Ethan. She worked two jobs and didn’t have family nearby to help with Ethan when needed. Although her life was stressful, Melanie was making it work and was still able to provide for her son. However, when Ethan turned four and started pre-school, he began to have major behavior issues in the classroom where he would suddenly get very upset and throw things or hurt himself or his classmates. After six months of multiple parent teacher meetings and trying to get help for her son, one day when Melanie came to pick up Ethan, she was told that he was no longer welcome at the childcare center. Melanie was devastated. She suddenly felt hopeless and didn’t have anyone or anything to turn to.
