Seymour Polatkin is a successful, gay Native American poet from Spokane who confronts his past when he returns to his childhood home on the reservation to attend the funeral of a dear friend.

Native American Heritage Month: Billy Mills Lecture
|
Billy Mills, Oglala Lakota (Sioux) is a gold medalist in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
He spoke about the pursuit of excellence and global unity through global diversity.
There was a great turn out and we enjoyed hosting Billy at UC San Diego.

The California Native American Research Center for Health (CA-NARCH) Fall Event was a big success!
Folks were able to join together in community with prizes, food, and more!

ITRC attended the National Indian Education Association (NIEA) Conference in October 2017.
The National Indian Education Association advances comprehensive, culture-based educational opportunities for American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians.
|

ITRC attended the Society for
Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS)
Conference.
SACNAS is an inclusive organization dedicated to fostering the success of Chicano/Hispanic and Native American scientists, from college students to professionals, in attaining advanced degrees, careers, and positions of leadership in STEM.

The ITRC participated in a meeting for the American Indian Counselors & Recruiters Association (AICRA) at Sacramento State this past quarter.
The ITRC will be hosting the Spring AICRA meeting and want you to be a part of it!
The goal of the AICRA is to act as a system wide work group designed to provide informational outreach services to the American Indian communities throughout the state targeting students, families, counselors and the community at large. Today, AICRA has expanded to include both the University of California and California State University systems to provide coordinated outreach and retention services for American Indian students.

Native American Heritage Month Celebration Kickoff Luncheon
|
We kicked off Native American Heritage Month celebrating with :
Green River Drummers
Keynote Speaker, Bridget Neconie from Indigenous Education, Inc., administrators of the Cobell Scholarship
Native Blues artist, Tracy Lee Nelson.
Our Kickoff Luncheon was a huge success and we were about to raise over $5000 for Native Scholarships!

UCSD sponsored a table at the AIR annual Awards Banquet.
UCSD staff, students, and community members were able to attend to celebrate deserving folks, gather with friends, and meet new people.

|
Students and community members joined together to attend the American Indian and Indigenous Film Festival.
UCSD and USD NASA organizations attended the film festival together.

NAHM: More Than A Word Screening
|
The filmmakers of More Than A Word, Kenneth and John Little shared a screening of their documentary with us and spoke with students on a panel.
Kenn and John Little will also be a part of our Native American Film & Storytelling Pilot.

Once We Had A River Screening
|
We enjoyed a great turn out to our screening of Once We Had a River.
Geneva Fitzsimmons and LaVonne Peck were great panelists and answered all the audience questions and concerns.
This important documentary chronicles issues about local Native water right.
|
|
|
|
To get ready for Olympic Gold Medalist, Billy Mills, we held a screening of Running Brave.
Running Brave is a 1983 film based on the story of
Billy Mills
, a North American Indian brought up on the reservation, destined against all odds to become the best distance runner in the world in the
1964 Tokyo Olympics
.

|
|
NASA had a screening of "Reel Injun", a film exploring the evolution of the image of Indians in Westerns and what cowboy-and-Indian myths mean to America.
|
|
|
|
|
Many people joined in our Beading Class to learn traditional beading techniques to create lanyards, pins, and more!
Thank you so much to Richard DeCrane and Karin Giron DeCrane for helping us celebrate Native American Heritage Month and leading our first beading class of the school year!

I'm Going to College Event
|
Last quarter we held our second annual I'm Going to College Program.
After 6 weeks of learning curriculum about college and higher education, we brought 4th graders from the Ch
á
mmakilawish Pechanga School to UC San Diego to experience day in life of a college student.
They received financial aid, bought books, and attended lectures.
We are excited to see what's to come for the future class of 2026!

We had a great study jam last quarter hosted by SPACES and NASA.

The ITRC celebrated our first Holiday Bash at the end of Fall Quarter!
With a ton of food, a white elephant gift exchange, and even a few birthday celebrations, everyone had a great time!

AIP and the Career Center have partnered to launch the Sophomore Internship Preparation Program (SIPP), a pilot program tailored to support second year students in the internship search. Our intention is for the program to encourage second year students to consider how their academic and student life experiences have prepared them for further professional experience, and equip them with additional tools and campus resources to find internship opportunities that will help them in their career path.
