Recognizing and Supporting Military Members and Veterans on Campus

 

 

The 2016 VA National Suicide Data Report indicates that an average of 20 veterans die by suicide each day, a number unchanged from previous reporting periods. The rate of death by suicide for veterans ages 18-34 steadily increased over the reporting period. Former Acting VA Secretary Peter O'Rourke indicates "suicide is a serious public health concern in the veteran population and across all communities nationwide. These data offer important insights to help VA to build effective networks of support, communication and care that reach veterans where they live and thrive." National Police Week 2019

 

This year marks the 57^th annual observance of National Police Week , which begins on Sunday, May 12 and runs through Saturday, May 18. National Police Week (NPW) pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. It is a collaborative effort by many organizations working together to honor those in the U.S. law enforcement community. The three primary organizers are the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF), which coordinates the Annual Candlelight Vigil; the Fraternal Order of Police/Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary Fraternal Order of Police/Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary , which organizes the Peace Officers Memorial Day Service at the U.S. Capitol; and Concerns of Police Survivors, which holds the National Police Survivors' Conference . This year, those unable to attend the Annual Candlelight Vigil on May 13^th at 8 PM ET will be able to attend virtually by live webcast . During the Candlelight Vigil, fallen officers whose names were engraved on the Memorial's walls this spring are formally dedicated. Held on the National Mall, in addition to the lighting of candles and reading of names, the Candlelight Vigil includes remarks by dignitaries and musical tributes performed to honor the memory of these fallen officers.

 

The names of 371 officers killed in the line of duty have been added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC this year. These 371 officers include 158 officers who were killed during 2018, plus 213 officers who died in previous years and were recently identified for their service. Preliminary data for 2019 (January 1- April 24, 2019) shows an overall decrease in officer fatalities of 31% compared to the same time period in 2018. Many organizations provide resources to survivors, families, and friends of law enforcement officers. The International Association of Chiefs of Police has a dedicated section of their website for family resources that includes information on sleep deprivation, injury reduction, support groups, and suicide prevention. Additional groups providing support include the National Alliance for Law Enforcement Support and the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services .
