News Brief
Newly Renovated Fourth Floor is Open
Milford Regional Medical Center opened its newly renovated fourth floor to patients on Monday, April 22. The fourth floor is designed to accommodate the needs of cancer and palliative care patients.

After months in the making, the fifty-five year old patient floor has undergone a dramatic transformation converting two- and four- bedrooms (44 beds in all) into 15 spacious, private rooms designed specifically with the care and treatment of cancer and palliative patients in mind.

Milford Regional was intent upon developing a soothing atmosphere to support not only the physical, but social and emotional needs of our patients. From murals that emanate the beauty of nature to comfortable sofa chairs that accommodate family and friends, each room has its own unique feeling of calm and serenity. It is our hope that the renovated fourth floor provides an additional layer of comfort and support to patients during their stay with us.
Question & Answer
Milford Regional is a Primary Stroke Center. What does that mean?
Milford Regional is recognized as a Primary Stroke Center by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the American Heart Association. Milford Regional continually meets specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period.

These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with a goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Before discharge, patients receive education on managing their health, get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions.

After a stroke patient returns home, we have a stroke survivors support group designed for the patient and their family members and friends.  Read more about this support group.
Healthy Living Tip
Why should we eat foods rich in anti-oxidants?
Anti-oxidants are compounds produced in your body and are also in the foods we eat.  They help minimize the impact of free radicals, which are an unstable byproduct of natural cell metabolism. Free radicals also are found in the environment, in exposure to sunlight, air pollution and cigarette smoke.

Free radicals trigger cell and tissue damage through a process called oxidation. This damage may play a part in the development of many different diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and some eye diseases. Eating a diet rich in antioxidants can help increase your blood antioxidant levels to fight oxidative stress and reduce the risk of these diseases.

Here is a list of several foods high in anti-oxidants:
  1. Dark Chocolate
  2. Pecans
  3. Blueberries
  4. Strawberries
  5. Artichokes

Patient Story
The Glass Half Full –Thoracic Surgery
Jim Laucis would have never believed that a ruptured appendix was good luck, but thanks to the thorough testing ordered by the Milford Regional emergency staff, he learned about a huge mass that ultimately turned out to be an extremely rare cancer.

Jim was referred to Brigham and Women’s Thoracic Surgery at Milford Regional where he met Dr. Whang. Jim underwent surgery to remove the mass and afterword stated, “Believe it or not, my appendix was a lot worse than this surgery.” He praised the Brigham and Women’s Thoracic Surgery team for keeping him well- informed along the way.

After the surgery, Jim said, “The biggest plus of all was that in 10 minutes, my wife could be at the hospital, that all the appointments were in Milford, and we had Dana-Farber people there for the cancer end of it.”

Concussions – What Parents Should Know
Over the last several years, there has been an increased awareness in the seriousness and long-term effects of concussions. This awareness has caused major changes to the ways in which athletes participate in sports. It is important for parents and students to have appropriate information to help identify and manage concussions. Watch this video to learn more about concussion symptoms and treatment.

The good news is the staff at Milford Regional Rehabilitation & Sports Medicine has undergone extensive education and training to provide comprehensive care to individuals (children and adults) that suffer with symptoms of concussions. In fact, we provide physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy at all three of our facilities – in Milford, Franklin and Northbridge.

New Location for Boston Children’s Specialty Clinic
Milford Regional is proud of our partnership with Boston Children’s Hospital that provides around-the-clock pediatric care in our emergency department and our Maternity Center. In addition, there is a specialty clinic that offers patients convenient access to specialty care including allergy and immunology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general surgery, genetics, neurology, pulmonary/respiratory diseases, urology, and in June – cardiologists will begin seeing patients here.

Recently, we moved the Pediatric Specialty Clinic from its location on the third floor to a much roomier location on the first floor. To find it, park behind the hospital (off Route 140) and enter through the Imaging Center Entrance. Take a left and it is just beyond the Blood Donor Center on the left.  The new location is more convenient for patients and better accommodates the growing number of specialties being offered by Boston Children’s Hospital here in Milford. Read more about the specialties offered at the clinic.
Laboratory and Blood Bank Accreditations
Recently, several inspectors from the College of American Pathologists (CAP) accreditation were here to survey our entire laboratory. Accreditation was granted after a rigorous inspection reviewing over 2,800 requirements!

Milford Regional was also granted American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) accreditation for transfusion services. The accreditation followed an intensive on-site assessment and establishes that the level of technical and administrative performance within the facility meets or exceeds the standards set by AABB.
