A Message from Chamber President
Our mission states that the Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce is organized to promote the prosperity and quality of life in our area so that the citizens and business community will thrive. One of our many objectives is connecting business to community.

We all work hard to this end and do it well through the long list of benefits our Chamber provides, the well-attended community events we offer and the awesome staff we have on the front line, all supported by a respectable membership of nearly 200 strong. Members that hail from Rockland to Augusta over to Bangor and Brewer and Downeast to Bar Harbor and Eastport.

Although this past year was successful in most arenas it was not without its challenges and losses. In late March we found ourselves without a building to house our Chamber office and information center. Thankfully we were able to lease the building next door and soon thereafter we entered into a purchase and sale agreement with the State Grange to buy the building. We are in the midst of raising $110,000 to cover the purchase and renovations of our new home and future community space.

For many years Leon Seymour was Executive Director of the Friends of Fort Knox. Leon’s passing last May not only left a gap in the Friends’ Organization but in the Chamber’s as well as he was our treasurer. Andy stepped down as President to fill the gap and I stepped in as President.

We regret that Andy has termed out as a board member, serving 9 years plus an initial 3 years as representative of the then Downtown Merchants Association. Thank you Andy for your commitment to the Chamber. We will miss you and look forward to your return in a year.

Thank you to our Board of Directors:

• Vice President, Jen Davenport of Bangor Savings Bank
• Secretary, Kathy Coogan of Two Rivers Realty
• Treasurer, Colleen Gross of Verona Wine & Design
• Tim Sampson of T.K. Sampson, Building Contractor
• Kathy James of Lighthouse Arts & Education
• Jessica Carter of The Local Variety
• Shawn Mercer of Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust
• Charley Earley of Lewis and Malm Architecture
• Tracy Sullens of The Bridge Church
• Colin Meshey of Coastal Maintainers
• Rich Rotella, Community and Economic Development Director for the Town of Bucksport

And Newly Elected:

• Catherine Ring of New England Institute for Teacher Education
• Eric Woodbury of Woodbury Law LLC

Thank you to our members, volunteers, sponsors and most of all our office staff Executive Director Leslie Wombacher and Administrative Assistant Alecia Smith. You both and an awesome job.

Thanks to Wayne Hand of the Bucksport Golf Club for hosting this event and to Ming’s Garden Restaurant for providing the buffet.

And lastly, don’t forget to contribute to our building fund so that we can continue to provide our members and the community with the services and events they have come to expect and that we strive to improve.

Thank you for the honor of being your President.
Biz Best,
Larry Wahl

and sale agreement with the Maine State Grange to purchase the building.

An Overview of Bucksport's Successes
Main Street Bucksport is helping several community organizations celebrate some of the successes and new initiatives launched over the past few years. Most of this work was made possible by countless volunteers giving more hours than anyone wants to count in order to create positive change in our community.

Over the next few weeks, MSB will be posting more details on their Facebook page about some of these events and groups that make them happen.

This is just the beginning of a long period of change and growth.
Thanks to Main Street Bucksport and Wednesday on Main for gathering the information and creating this very impactful flyer!

IRS News

2. IRS expands penalty relief for taxpayers whose payments fell short in 2018

The IRS provided additional expanded penalty relief to taxpayers whose federal income tax withholding and estimated tax payments fell short of their total tax liability for 2018 by lowering to 80 percent the threshold required to qualify.

The IRS is now waiving the estimated tax penalty for any taxpayer who paid at least 80 percent of their total tax liability through federal income tax withholding, quarterly estimated tax payments or a combination of the two. The revised waiver computation will be integrated into commercially-available tax software and reflected in the forthcoming revision of the instructions for Form 2210, Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals, Estates, and Trusts.

3. Two IRS publications every business owner and self-employed individual should read

The 2019 revision of Form 656-Booklet, Offer in Compromise (OIC) will be available for download on IRS.gov, Monday, March 25. The booklet contains current forms and instructions for submitting an OIC. Using previous versions of the booklet may result in delayed processing of OIC applications.

Publication 5318, Tax Reform: What’s New for Your Business, provides an overview of many of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act changes that affect business taxes. Topics include:

  • Qualified business income deduction
  • Depreciation
  • Business related losses, exclusions and deductions
  • Other miscellaneous provisions

Additional help for filing business taxes is available in Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax, and the IRS.gov tax reform information page.
