BC Hockey, in partnership with the Vancouver Canucks, Air North and the Yukon Government Sport and Recreation Branch, are excited to bring the Canucks Learn to Skate program to Whitehorse and the Air North National Aboriginal Hockey Championship (NAHC) School Tour to surrounding communities.
The week of fun-filled events kicks off on Saturday, May 4, 2019 with the Vancouver Canucks Learn to Skate program. Canucks alumni Dave Babych and Jyrki Lumme, along with the Canucks mascot Fin, will hit the ice with local coaches to help first-time players learn the basics of skating and hockey. Thirty (30) kids who have never played organized hockey before will receive head-to-toe equipment from the Canucks, including skates, a stick and a helmet.
Following the on-ice event, the public are invited to the Canucks Hot Stove Panel where the alumni will be available to take part in a Q&A, sign autographs and pose for pictures. Bring your old Canucks "skate" memorabilia to get signed by Babych and Lumme.
From May 6 - 9, 2019, BC Hockey, the Yukon Government Sport and Recreation Branch and NAHC representatives will travel to four (4) communities to give youth the opportunity to learn hockey through floorball. BC Hockey will deliver educational presentations to kids at elementary schools and a friendship centre. The presentation includes: a demonstration on basic hockey skills, a deliverable educational program and the donation of a set of floorball equipment for the children to continue to learn hockey skills and remain physically active.
