WANDERLUST WEEK!

Day 64: Tamales Anyone?

From Della Valenzuela, World's Window manager, "Some of the most wonderful memories I have with my husband's family are sitting around the table eating the most complicated, flavorful, time consuming specialties bursting with love; mole, sopas, and of course tamales."

If you are wanting to get out, why not try something new? Here are some of the best tamale places in Kansas City according to Della.

Destination:   Tamales!

Reyna's Mexican Bakery.  You have to call ahead to pick up, or to see what types are available. It is also a full panaderia.  It smells like Mexican spices and fresh bread.
Address: 727 Kansas Av, Kansas City KS

Los Alamos Market y Cocina.  Also a grocery store with chimineas and pinatas, it is a cafe with take-out tamales.
Address:  1667 Summit, Kansas City MO

Carniceria y Tortilleria.  Only weekends, by the dozen
Address:  830 Kansas Av, Kansas City KS

Ninfa's Tortillas y Taqueria. They have a guy who is very visible from all parts of the restaurant who is constantly making tortillas and then throwing them into piles to bag up.  They bring them to you hot with a squeeze bottle of butter on the table, as an appetizer. They have pork and cheese and jalapeno tamales sold individually and 1/2 or full dozen.
Address:  964 Kansas Av, Kansas City KS

Cafe Corazon  offers delicious tamales made by the non-profit, The Tamale Kitchen which creates jobs for the Hispanic community. This place is full of heart.
Address:  1721 Westport Rd, Kansas City MO

In Latin American cultures, Food + Family = Love. In addition to strong family ties and culinary delights, they also have rich artistic traditions such as pottery, textile arts, wood carving and mask making. World's Window has a long history of presenting a wide variety of Latin American arts and crafts.  Here are just four of our more unusual items:

Are you ready to explore what's in store? Click on any picture to see the piece in more detail

This flying mermaid represents a petition for bountiful fishing as well as safety on the open seas. The pot she is holding represents an offering. T his unique piece is made of zumpantle wood ( a type of cottonwood).

Made of tin, this bird wall hanging embodies a bird-spirit. It is a true folk art object from state of Guerrero Mexico.  The piece is flat so it will hang nicely against a wall.

Masks are used in a wide variety of dances, ceremonies, festivals, theatre and tourism.  Depictions of demons or devils have been used in various dances and rituals from morality plays to satires.

This mask is attributed to Totonicapan, Guatemala and has real goat horns.  It can be easily hung for a dramatic focal point to any area.

Also from the state of Guerrero, Mexico this painted tin frog spirit wall hanging is an image often used as a entreaty for rain.
