Rise Up, Sisters
New Haven Museum
114 Whitney Ave. New Haven 203-562-4183
As the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in the United States approaches, the New Haven Museum (NHM) will celebrate with two programs from the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame’s (CWHF). “Rise Up, Sisters,” a banner exhibit chronicling the diverse group of Connecticut women who were instrumental in the movement for women’s suffrage, will arrive on February 26, 2020, and remain on view through Monday, March 2, 2020. A lecture entitled “Votes for Women,” will be presented on March 2, at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free to both programs.
The “Rise Up, Sisters” exhibit tells of courageous Connecticut women, from the extraordinary Smith sisters of Glastonbury who spoke up about injustices against women and helped spark others to follow in their footsteps, to Alice Paul, who put her life on the line to force the issue on a national level, and whose tenacity helped to sway public opinion in the final hours.
