New Hotel on Rocky Point Opening in June
When The Current Hotel opens in June at 2545 N. Rocky Point Dr., it will bring shopping, dining and a 4,000-square-foot rooftop lounge with panoramic views of Tampa Bay - along with 180 guest rooms. Additionally, the hotel will feature an Oxford Exchange-curated boutique, Buddy Brew, and a J.C. Newman cigar lounge. MORE
180 Apartments Planned for Rocky Point
Northwood Ravin has purchased the vacant 3-acre lot next to the Westin Tampa Bay on Rocky Point with plans to build 180 residential apartments. Northwood's website anticipates a groundbreaking in 2019, with the first units to deliver in 2021. MORE
Dual-branded Marriott Hotel Coming to Midtown Tampa
Midtown Tampa unveiled plans for its dual-branded Element and Aloft hotel, both Marriott brands geared toward millennials. The hotel will feature 226 rooms, a rooftop terrace, pool and lounge designed to appeal to locals as much as to out-of-towners. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer on the seven-story hotel with an opening date planned for 2021. Midtown developer The Bromley Companies is partnering with hotel development and management company Concord Hospitality on the project. MORE

Midtown also recently announced that  Chris Ponte, one of the Tampa Bay area's culinary leaders for the past decade-plus, is opening a new restaurant at Midtown Tampa. MORE

In more Midtown news, the development will also be home to the Tampa Bay area's first Tr ue Food Kitchen , a health-conscious restaurant backed by an investment from Oprah Winfrey. MORE
WestShore Plaza owner Washington Prime Group has acquired almost two acres in the northwest quadrant of West Shore and Kennedy boulevards - property currently occupied by a Bank of America branch. Washington Prime is planning a mixed-use development on Sears' department store real estate and surrounding surface parking. Redevelopment opportunities could include a variety of uses, from condos and apartments to office space to a grocery store. MORE
Macy's Backstage, the department store's discount outlet with a focus on fast-selling merchandise, is coming to WestShore Plaza in June. Plans filed with the city show that Macy's will renovate 26,982 square feet on the third floor to make way for the new Backstage outlet. MORE
The Business Observer recently reported on a pair of new Westshore office buildings expected to be complete by the end of 2021. Taken together, Zons Development's Skyview Plaza, located at 3415 E Frontage Road next to the Social Security Administration, and the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority's SkyCenter at Tampa International Airport will bring 258,000 square feet of new Class A office space to Westshore. FAA seeking public input for changes to Tampa International Airport airspace
As part of the South-Central Florida Metroplex Initiative, the Federal Aviation Administration is proposing a number of changes to flight paths and procedures at Tampa International Airport and several other airports throughout Florida. The goal of the initiative is to improve air traffic flow and reduce congestion in Florida's air space. The FAA recently held several public workshops in the Tampa Bay area to review the proposed changes. If you were unable to attend, the FAA is accepting comments online.
Take the Tampa Bay Commuters Pledge To Improve Your Commute
From now until June 2019, commuters around Tampa Bay will pledge to commute to work through public transit, biking, carpooling, walking, and teleworking. Commuters traveling for work or school to/from Hillsborough and Pinellas counties can take the pledge for any mode at any time. Weekly prize winners will be drawn from the mode of the month pledges (May: Walk, June: Telework/Compressed Work Week), announced on the website TampaBayCommuters.com
