All new or gently loved stuffed animals will be collected in the lobby of The Summit. The Stuffed animal drive is from Monday, September 13th through 17th

In honor of National Teddy Bear Day, and the kick-off of our stuffed animal drive, all Summit students are invited to bring in ONE teddy bear (or stuffed animal) to school NEXT THURSDAY, September 9th. Their stuffed animal should be small enough to fit in a backpack and sit on the corner of their desk.

Patriot Day $2 Uniform Buy Out on Friday 9/10
Our first $2 Uniform Buy Out of the year will support Operation Gratitude in honor of the 20th Anniversary of 9/11 (Patriot Day). Operation Gratitude is a charity that helps military personnel and families that were involved in 9/11. Since 2003, they have sent over three million care packages all over the world.

Upper School students researched and voted on which charitable organization to contribute to and selected Operation Gratitude because out of all researched charities, Operation Gratitude has the highest percentage of donated funds used for program services (94.7%).

On Friday, September 10th, students may bring in $2 (cash preferred) to dress in a red, white, and/or blue outfit of their choosing (must be school appropriate). Money will be collected in the lobby and donated to Operation Gratitude to honor those who sacrificed on 9/11 and support their loved ones.

Around Campus
Kindergarten Cartographers
Last week, the Kindergarten morning message included the question, "What might you find on a map?" Students worked together to brainstorm a list of many locations and attractions including: treasure, Florida, Egypt, a movie theater, The Summit, home, and more. Over the next few weeks, they will be working toward answering the essential question, "Where do I live?"

Kindergarteners were introduced to the geobrowser, Google Earth. Using this online tool, students explored the earth view, North America, the United States, Missouri, Springfield, and finally - The Summit Prep! With each successive "zoom," they got closer and closer to where they are.

Students then became cartographers, creating a basic map including roads and attractions. They will continue learning about maps and their place in the world over the next few weeks.
2nd Grade Saves Sam with STEM
At The Summit, our students develop the skills of curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. In second grade, students "c" even more opportunities for growth by practicing cooperation, collaboration, and compromise. Add in some gummy worms... and you have a great STEM and cooperative learning activity!

The mission was to save Sam (the gummy worm) by retrieving his life jacket (gummy Life Saver), and then putting it on Sam. With only one paper clip per person, students had to work together and put those skills of creativity and critical thinking to the test to rescue their gummy friend. Be sure to ask a Summit second grader if their mission was a success!
Upper School Spanish... Todos los días!
Spanish classes are off to a fabuloso start! Students at the Summit get to visit the Spanish classroom todos los días, or every single day! Some of the highlights so far have been choosing their very own Spanish name to use throughout the school year and playing the ever popular games known as Mono Loco (Crazy Monkey) and Matamoscas (Flyswatters).

Playing active games provides students with the opportunity for movement while utilizing Spanish listening and speaking skills to ask and answer questions about themselves. This approach to learning is known as Total Physical Response (TPR) and will be utilized frequently in the Spanish classroom.
Athletics & Activities
There's Still Time... Sign Up for Summit Clubs!
Be sure to check out these athletic opportunities for students this fall. Tennis club starts tomorrow (9/2), and archery starts mid-September!

Check your email next week for even more after school enrichment opportunities for Early Learners and Lower School through Raven Clubhouse. Details coming soon!

Upper School students can check out all our MSHSAA offerings on our website at thesummitprep.org/athletics or by emailing Sarah Leighninger, Athletic Director.
Girl Scouts Celebrate Together
The Summit Girl Scouts, Troop 70462, celebrated their annual bridging and rededication ceremony followed by a potluck dinner last Saturday. The ceremony included the introduction of new scouts, welcoming back veteran scouts, and sharing accomplishments.

Troop Leader, Shelley Beall, is grateful for the opportunity to gather and celebrate as a community. She says, "I am so proud of the dedication and commitment our Girl Scouts and their families have shown to our troop over the years, especially throughout the pandemic when it was easier for a lot of troops in our area to disband. Our families have displayed unwavering support for their daughters in scouting and as a result, The Summit can continue to provide a safe place for girls to grow in confidence, grow in courage, and grow in character."

Shelley's daughter, Maren, is starting her 11th year of Girl Scouts. Maren appreciates the social and leadership opportunities being a Scout provides. She says, "I have enjoyed learning to be a leader and getting to know other people. This has helped me with team building skills that I will most likely need to have in the real world. Plus, I like doing the art projects in every session. I'd recommend Scouts for people who want to have fun, find out their interests, and learn life skills."

If you have a Summit student (Kindergarten and up) interested in learning more about Girl Scouts, contact Summit Troop Leader and Summit Parent, Shelley Beall, for more information!

The Summit Girl Scouts are also looking for a parent interested in co-leading our youngest group, the Daisies (Kindergarten & 1st grade). If you are interested, or would like more information, please contact Shelley Beall.
