To eliminate the restriction on the length of Runway 2-20 at Tweed-New Haven Airport
The Greater New Haven region is poised for growth, with excellent colleges, a millennial-friendly downtown, world-class healthcare and thriving startups in biotech and digital tech.
New Haven checks every box but one: transportation. Tweed-New Haven Airport is a key asset in the region's transportation infrastructure and yet is one of the most underserved markets in the country. In fact, the New Haven ranks fourth from the bottom among cities in air service nationwide, and 63% of local passengers are opting to use JFK and LaGuardia, creating jobs in New York.
The Tweed Airport Coalition is calling on the state to eliminate the restriction on the length of Runway 2-20 as it would allow for more commercial flights and economic development. The airport is crucially important to attract and retain a wide spectrum of businesses and talent that bolster the local economy while supporting hundreds of jobs. The coalition represents the interests of the traveling community, the business community and the neighboring community, to make sure that all interests are heard, respected and balanced. This is not a New Haven or an East Haven issue, it's a regional issue that affects the state's economy.

Yale New Haven Hospital announces major investment on Saint Raphael campus
A big investment at Yale New Haven Hospital could mean more jobs for the Elm City.
Renderings offer a look at a one-stop-shop for patients living with some of the most challenging neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis, Parkinsons, and stroke.
"These patients have a lot to deal with, and this is going to provide in-patient, out-patient, diagnostic treatments, clinical trials," explained CEO of Yale New Haven Hospital Marna Borgstrom.
The hospital announced plans to build a new $838 million neurosciences center on its Saint Raphael Campus. It means hundreds of construction and permanent jobs.

More millennials moving to Connecticut
The New Haven-Milford area has emerged as one of the the nation's top spots for millennials on the move.
That's according to a new study by the National Association of Realtors.

Using the U.S. Census Bureau's 2017 American Community Survey, the study found New Haven-Milford - and Madison, Wisc. - saw the largest share of arrivals among millennials. The study is an analysis of the 100 largest metro areas is based on the U.S. Census Bureau's 2017 American Community Survey, which tracked households with an age range of 19 to 37.

Greater New Haven leaders to form regional affordable housing committee
Area leaders, at the request of New Haven officials, took steps Wednesday to form a regional housing committee to address ways to increase the availability of affordable housing in Greater New Haven.
The South Central Regional Council Governments board, made up of the mayors and first selectmen of 15 area municipalities, voted unanimously to form the new regional housing committee.
The COG vote came after a presentation by Serena Neal-Sanjurjo, executive director of New Haven's Livable Cities Initiative, on behalf of the city's Affordable Housing Task Force. Bethany First Selectwoman Derrylyn Gorski made the motion to the COG, with Woodbridge First Selectwoman Beth Heller seconding it.

UConn engineering students to tackle Hamden brownfields
A group of University of Connecticut engineering students and the town of Hamden are partnering on a project, the Connecticut Brownfields Initiative (CBI). The program trains undergraduate students to work with municipalities to remediate brownfields sites.
With a substantial inventory of former industrial properties but limited staff resources for substantial remediation work, Hamden poses a suitable challenge for such an undertaking.
CBI trains the student workers, then deploys them into the partner municipality on a pro bono basis. There they work with staff on grant-writing and then proceed to actual remediation work under the watchful eye of UConn faculty experts.

Biotech Blazer Blooms On Long Wharf
Twelve stories above New Haven Harbor, a burgeoning biotech company is using Big Data technology to mine Big Pharma chemistry and create new drugs that treat pancreatic cancer and some of the symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease, schizophrenia, and delirium.
The company is BioXcel Therapeutics. It is, a publicly-traded spin-off of the Branford-based data analytics company BioXcel Corporation, which specializes in using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create new medicines in the realms of neuroscience and immuno-oncology.
BioXcel's first two drugs, BXCL501 and BXCL701, both of which are still under development, arose from the sifting through of millions upon millions of pages of pharmaceutical research and clinical studies to find existing drugs that can be reconfigured and repurposed to address underserved medical needs.
