Bearfootin' Bear Auction This Saturday, October 19
Funds Collected for Hibiscus De Fleur to Support United Way

This year's Bearfootin' Auction is this Saturday, October 19 at 5 pm in front of the Historic Courthouse. Remember, half of the proceeds go to local charities, and the winning bid for Hibiscus De Fleur will benefit United Way of Henderson County! Festivities are from 3-6 pm so come on out and support the Bear Auction and United Way!

United Way's bear,  Hibiscus De Fleur, was generously sponsored by  BMW of Asheville  and lovingly painted and promoted by Kerry Griffin.

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we are turning the spotlight on Safelight, a local non-profit agency that provides support for survivors of interpersonal violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Services include a 24-hour crisis line, shelter, forensic interviews and medical exams for children who have been sexually assaulted, counseling advocacy, support groups, community educational programs, case management, job training and more.

United Way of Henderson County is proud to support many of Safelight's programs and initiatives.

One critical piece of their work is the job training program. By providing avenues for career counseling, internships and hands-on training, Safelight gives women opportunities to become financially stable and build safe, self-sufficient families.

Dandelion eatery is the cornerstone of the job training program.  Participants gain experience and strengthen interpersonal skills while receiving additional services for themselves and their families.  Learn more about Safelight programs  here

Small Business League: Making a BIG Impact in Transportation to Employment

United Way of Henderson County's Small Business League (SBL) is making a huge impact in our community. In addition to contributing to the Community Investment Fund to support the health, education, financial stability and basic needs, League members recently  approved a  $2,100 distribution to Apple Country Transit to fund bus passes for transportation to employment, job interviews, and other job related functions.  A big thank you to our 2019 SBL members for making this incredible contribution.

The SBL also hosted its second annual Kickball Tournament to celebrate and raise awareness about the League. On Sunday October 6, teams from all over the county showed up to play ball.

A little drizzle didn't damper the high spirits of all of our players, and the competition was fierce! The final game came down to Horizon and SELEE, and after three action packed innings, the 2019 trophy was awarded to SELEE Corporation. We can't wait until next year to see who the 2020 champs will be!

Thank you to our participating teams from  Hajoca Hendersonville, Hendersonville Community Co-Op, Horizon Heating & Air, Root Performance Fitness, Southern Appalachian Brewery, SELEE Corporation, and TPS Landscaping.

We are also grateful to the City of Hendersonville  for providing space for the Kickball Tournament, UWHC Board Chair and Associate Superintendent of Schools John Bryant for serving as Commissioner, and Asheville Tourists announcer Tim Lolley for donating his services. A special thank you to our drink sponsors Southern Appalachian Brewery and Pepsi and to the volunteers that made the event possible!

SELEE Corporation won the 2nd Annual SBL Kickball Tournament on October 6. More photos can be found here.
