The MAB is interested in your experiences with the streaming of high school sports. As it stands, most high schools have signed an agreement with National Federation of High Schools, giving NFHS the exclusive rights to streaming. This prohibits broadcasters from streaming games. LEGISLATIVE UPDATES

WLNS, MAB Partner with AG, SOS to Offer Statewide Election Special on October 28
WLNS-TV (Lansing), in partnership with the MAB, is inviting stations across the state to carry a very important election town hall meeting. "Making It Count: A Voter Information Town Hall" will air Wednesday, October 28 from 7 - 8 p.m. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson will take voter questions on what to expect when they go to the polls on November 3. Read More

Paycheck Protection Extensions to Local Media Gets New Push In Senate
Local media outlets as well as live venues, restaurants and other small businesses would be in line for more than $370 billion of support in a bill introduced by a group of Senate Democrats, according to a report in InsideRadio. The bill, which they have titled the Heroes Small Business Lifeline Act, would extend the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) through March 2021 and expand the eligibility to more sectors of the economy, most notably to local radio and television stations as well as local newspapers. Read More

National Association of Broadcasters President Gordon Smith has a somewhat unique vantage point when it comes to journalism, according to a report in Inside Radio. Looking at FCC Non-Vacancy Specific EEO Outreach Efforts - the 'Menu Options' - in a Pandemic World

In the last few weeks, we have received several inquiries from broadcasters about the FCC's enforcement of its requirements that broadcasters conduct non-vacancy specific outreach efforts to educate their communities about broadcast employment opportunities and to train their staff to assume greater responsibility at stations and otherwise assist them in their career development (not to train them for their current positions, but to prepare them to assume a position with more responsibilities as their careers advance). Read More

Public Television Stations Partner with Michigan Educators to Build New Statewide Learning Service
Michigan's public television stations, in partnership with leading educators and community leaders, have announced the creation of the Michigan Learning Channel. Organized by Detroit Public TV, the network will deliver instructional content programming to students, parents and teachers, using a wide variety of media platforms, including a system of dedicated broadcast channels. Read More

Beasley Detroit Hosts 'Solutions Not Slogans' Zoom Event
On October 20, Beasley Media Group's 105.9 KISS-FM (WDMK-FM) On Air Personalities Mason and Angie Star, along with 105.1 The Bounce (WMGC-FM) Morning Show Host Gello and The Detroit Praise Network's (93.5, 98.3, 99.9) Randi Myles, hosted a zoom conference call with community leaders to discuss ways to encourage listeners residing in Metro Detroit area to get out and vote. Read More

WHMI Hosts Congressional Race Debate With 8th District Candidates Slotkin, Junge
On October 6, Krol Communication's WHMI-FM (Howell) hosted a debate between Michigan's 8th District Democratic incumbent Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin of Holly and Republican challenger Paul Junge of Brighton.  The debate was the third and final debate between the candidates. Read More

WKZO Airs State District 61 Candidate Debate
On October 16, Midwest Communication's WKZO-AM/FM (Kalamazoo) aired a live debate between candidates vying for the Michigan House District 61 seat.  WKZO's Ken Lanphear and Jeana Gondek moderated the debate between Democratic candidate and Kalamazoo County Commissioner Christine Morse and Republican candidate Bronwyn Haltom, who discussed various issues concerning Michigan residents. Read More

WCMU Offers Broadcast Journalism Workshop
On October 16, WCMU Public Radio (Mt. Pleasant) held its Broadcast Journalism Workshop.  Selected students will be given a paid summer 2021 internship, in which they will produce broadcast stories for WCMU, print stories for a newspaper and web content for both. Sixteen CMU students joined the workshop both in-person and virtually for an intensive training and to be part of the selection process. Read More

Spotify Now Allows Anybody to Create a Radio Show with Music

Last week, Spotify unveiled a new feature that enables podcasters to add songs to their shows. This overcomes a major hurdle that podcasters have endured for years: music licensing issues which prevented them from legally including music in their shows. The practical upshot of this feature is that anybody (at least, anybody in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, New Zealand or Ireland) can now become a radio DJ, essentially narrating their own mixtape and publishing it for public consumption.
