Message from the Principal
Dear DHS Staff, Students, and Families,

I am thrilled to welcome our students and staff into the building this week for the start of the 2021-22 school year! With that said, over the past week, many students and staff have already been on-campus for a number of sports, performing arts, activities, and events. A special thanks to our students, directors, coaches, sponsors, staff, and families who made this past week such a success! Let's continue the momentum into the start of the academic school year.

Below, in this newsletter, you will find important details and reminders about the start of the school year. You may also reference the Welcome Letter that I sent to families on July 28 (linked below). Moving forward, every Thursday, I will send a newsletter detailing the schedule for the next week, as well as a recap of the current week. Hopefully, this year, we will have fewer weekly challenges to manage!

I hope you have a wonderful start to the school year. We are excited to see all of our students on Wednesday!

Sincerely,
Principal Kathryn Anderson

Important Details to Start the School Year
Student Entry - Students do not need to have a completed health screener or scan their ID at the entryway each morning.

A-Deck - The A-Deck entrance is open for student parking entry in the morning until 8:10 a.m.

COVID Mitigation - All students, staff, and visitors must wear a mask inside the school building.

Lunch - We are returning to closed campus lunch. Students will be able to purchase lunch in the student cafeteria and may eat in the student cafeteria, courtyard, coffee bar/blocks area, and front lobby/hallway area.

Library - The library is reopening this school year. After the first week of school, students may be able to check out of study hall to use the library. (Details about how to check out of study hall will be shared with students next week.) Some students will also be assigned to the library after their science lab is over on lab days.

Lockers - Lockers are not automatically assigned to sophomores-seniors. Students who would like a locker should visit the Deans' office.

Study halls - Students are required to attend study hall during their assigned period. After the first week of school, students will be able to sign out to go to the library, ARC, testing center, or other designated areas. Details about checking out of study hall will be shared with students next week. Students in good academic standing who have a study hall at the beginning or end of the day will be allowed to miss their study hall with parent/guardian consent. Parents/guardians will receive separate communication about how to give consent to allow their student to not attend study hall at the beginning or end of the day.
Mr. Sykora, Visual Arts Teacher, named 2021 Art Educator of the Year
Congratulations to Mr. Chris Sykora, DHS Visual Arts Teacher, who was named the 2021 Art Educator of the Year by the Illinois Art Education Association. In addition to his work at DHS, Mr. Sykora co-founded the Illinois High School Art Exhibition and serves as its Assistant Director & Secretary. Mr. Sykora also previously served as the Illinois Art Education Association's Advocacy Taskforce Chair. A role that included facilitating discussions with key policy officials in Illinois and across the country. This work has been vital in improving arts access in public schools and in learning how to serve education reform more effectively. In his spare time, Mr. Sykora leads professional development opportunities across the country in the form of videos, classes, workshops, and presentations.

SHIELD Testing
SHIELD testing will be conducted at DHS twice per week on the days, times and locations below.

Location: J108
Mondays and Thursdays 12:00 - 4:00

Unvaccinated students in extracurricular activities and athletics are required to test once per week during one of the two testing options each week below to maintain eligibility. Vaccinated students are welcome to test, if consent is on file, but are not required to do so.

Unlike last year, testing will be conducted on a walk-in basis; no appointments are necessary. Students should only test during lunch periods, study halls, passing periods, or after school. A consent form must be on file with SHIELD in order to test.
