CHAPTER UPDATES
International Women's Day

International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated annually on March 8th. This day of recognition provides an important opportunity to celebrate women's achievements while calling for greater equality. The 2020 theme and yearlong watchword for (IWD) is “ An equal world is an enabled world.”

The global day of celebration focuses on the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Women’s issues are not country, group, or organization-specific and belong to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD gives rise to unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy, and action for women all over the world.

PURPLE is the primary color to signify and mark IWD internationally. Historically, purple, green, and white are combined to symbolize women's equality originating from the Women's Social and Political Union in the UK during 1908. Purple signifies justice and dignity. Green symbolizes hope. White represents purity; however, no longer used due to 'purity' being a controversial concept.

How can you get involved? Individually, we're all responsible for our thoughts and actions. We can actively choose to challenge stereotypes, raise awareness against bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations, and celebrate women's achievements. An equal world is an enabled world. The race is on for the gender-equal boardroom, a gender-equal government, gender-equal media coverage, gender-equal workplaces, gender-equal sports coverage, more gender equality in health and wealth. Let us be a voice in the Women’s equality movement. Share your support and affirmations on Twitter using the hashtags: #EachforEqual or #IWD2020.
