Changes to the National Flood Insurance Program

Government Announces Changes
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently announced an overhaul to the risk rating system for flood insurance, which could lead to drastic rate changes. Many homeowners rely on the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) for protection from water damage, but recently announced reforms could drastically change insurance rates. In the future, insurers could consider a home’s unique flood risks when determining rates, which could lead to drastic increases that may even impact your home’s value.

These changes represent some of the most significant reforms to the NFIP—a program that has gone largely unchanged since the 1970s. While the reforms are expected to help communities better plan for extreme weather, they could increase premiums for homeowners in high-risk areas.

Cape May County expects steady tourism growth in 2019
BILL BARLOW For the Press  May 20, 2019

Now a $6.6 billion industry, tourism in Cape May County likely will continue to grow at a slow, steady pace, according to Diane Wieland, the director of the county tourism department.

“I’m always happy to report any growth,” Wieland said at the Cape May County Tourism Conference for 2019, held in the Cape May County administration building Friday morning. “This year we were up 3.8%. Last year we were up 1.4. We’ll take it.”

Cape May County breaks ground on airport 'tech village'

Just before officials broke ceremonial ground at the Cape May Airport for the first of three buildings that will make up an "innovation hub" for tech businesses, Cape May County Freeholder Will Morey got on his phone and said the men were one shovel shy.

Materializing from the horizon, a six-propeller drone towing a gold shovel flew to the men across a field that will, in the next few years, house the next two buildings of the tech village.

The drone's appearance signified the future of innovation the county hopes to usher in. The Village Tech, as the first building is called, will cost $6.2 million, supplemented by a $3 million federal grant received in August.

Start Prepping Now: Federal Overtime Rules May Change
New Jersey Business Action Center

The U.S. Department of Labor recently proposed new rules that would raise the exemption threshold for mandatory overtime pay. The current exemption stands at an annual salary of $23,660, but the new proposal aims to raise it to $35,308, a significant change that would see many employees become newly qualified if they work more than 40 hours per week. A similar effort in 2016 was unsuccessful, but this current initiative is expected to pass. If so, it could take effect by January 2020.

Adult-use cannabis to be pushed to 2020 ballot
NJ BIZ By:  Daniel J. Munoz   May 15, 2019   11:59 am

The state Legislature is holding off on a bill to legalize recreational marijuana and instead will let voters approve it in a ballot initiative during the 2020 presidential election, a route which the Murphy administration and legislative leadership were ultimately hoping to avoid.

An attempt will still be made to approve two bills by June 30 that would expand the state’s medical marijuana program and set up the process for expunging cannabis-related criminal offenses.

“We aren’t going to go forward with adult-use marijuana at this time, it’s something I believe strongly in, but the votes aren’t there and we can’t hold back progress,” Senate President Stephen Sweeney, D-3rd District, said at a Wednesday morning press conference.
