Safely and Slowly the Humane Society of Greater Dayton Moves to Reopen Main Shelter

As our state begins to slowly reopen, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton is also starting to reopen some of our programs. The safety of our staff, our animals and our community continues to be our top priority. This will be a gradual process that will limit interactions and maintain safe social distancing per the recommendations of our state leaders.
May 5th
On May 5th, we plan to reopen our Community Cat Program. As warm weather is upon us, so is Kitten Season (the time of year when cats breed and an influx of kittens come into shelters). Starting next week, we will have staff on site to begin spaying and neutering these community cats again. Surgeries are done
by appointment only
on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Cats must be unowned community cats and must be brought to us in a humane trap. If you need to rent a trap, we will have curbside trap rentals available starting next week between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The community cats will be dropped off in their traps for surgery curbside between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. It is important for all trappers to stay in their cars and call our curbside number for a staff member to come out and assist you. Pick-up for the community cats once they are spayed or neutered will be between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. curbside at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. For everyone's safety, volunteers and the general public will not be allowed into the shelter yet.
We are also offering a virtual Cat Trapper Training Course every Wednesday that is free and open to the public.

We know many of you are excited to adopt a new pet and we love the enthusiasm. As of right now, we are planning to open our Adoption Program up by appointment only starting May 12th. We will have more information regarding this in the next few days, so please make sure to follow us on our

Resources for Pet Owners Escaping Abuse
|
Support. Safety. Hope. These are the three things the Humane Society of Greater Dayton along with the YWCA Dayton and the Artemis Center want to provide to people in abusive situations and their pets. Through the Safe Pet Shelter Program, those in abusive relationships can reach out to one of these groups. We work directly with them to temporarily house pets while individuals and families are able to flee abusive situations. This way the people and the pets remain safe!

Now through June 30th, we have partnered with Target as part of their Target Circle Program. Create a Target account or sign in and when you shop online or in-store you accumulate votes. Visit your online account and you can designate your votes for the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. You votes turn into donations right to the animals in our care!

Sign Up for Our Virtual Cat Trapper Training Class

Learn all about the basics of Trap-Neuter-Return and cat trapping in our new virtual class! Every Wednesday starting at 5 p.m. we will offer a free Cat Trapper Training class. This class is open to the public and will teach you the basics of TNR as well as how to safely use humane traps.

for their “Quotes for Good” campaign! Through all of May, for every person who contacts them and completes an auto, fire, life or health quote, they will donate $10 to the animals in our care. Volunteer of the Month:
Dale White
|
This month we would like to congratulate Dale White for being our May Volunteer of the Month! Dale has been with our organization since 2018. Since he started, he has put in nearly 650 hours of volunteer time helping our shelter. Our staff can always count on Dale. He has helped us in almost every volunteer position at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton and constantly steps in when there is a last-minute need.
Dale is always happy, goofy and loves to make us all laugh with his "dad jokes." He comes in every week to help clean cat cages, dog kennels and any other miscellaneous work including working adoption events or helping with our donation box program. He is an incredible volunteer and in his role has also began helping run volunteer orientations to give his valuable perspective to new volunteers.
We once named a Great Dane after him and ever since then, we refer to him as The Great Dale. We are so lucky to have him as part of our HSGD Family and thank him so much for all he does for the animals and the staff!

Volunteering Goes Virtual During COVID-19 Shutdown
|
The outpouring of love from our community has been so inspiring! Our volunteer coordinator continues to work with individuals who want to be ready to volunteer with us once the shelter reopens. She is offering one-on-one virtual volunteer orientations to engage the community. During these sessions, she goes over the basic orientation, gives a virtual tour of the shelter and so much more! When we announced we had to close our shelters, we were amazed over how many wonderful people came forward to welcome one of our shelter animals into their homes as a foster for us.
We loved all the videos we received back and many of the families ended up adopting these animals. It has been a wonderful reminder that through it all, together we are showing the world that we are #InThisTogetherOhio.
