Pentecost no bkgrnd

October 17, 2019   Emmanuel's E-News
Greetings from
Emmanuel Episcopal Church!

This Sunday is the Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost.

This is the longest season of the church year, lasting from Pentecost Day until Advent. The year following Epiphany and Pentecost is called Ordinary Time, and includes no major feasts. But it is a time for learning and reflection. The color of the season is green, symbolizing the life and growth of the church.

We look forward to seeing you in church!

October 20 is the Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Prior to the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, Sundays in this long period of the church year were identified and counted in terms of the number of Sundays after Trinity Sunday instead of the number of Sundays after Pentecost. This period is also understood by some as "ordinary time," a period of the church year not dedicated to a particular season or observance.

Saint of the week:
Luke the Evangelist

Feast Day: October 18

"Receive thy sight, thy faith hath saved thee" Luke 18:42

Luke the Evangelist is one of the Four Evangelists- the four authors of canonical Gospels of Jesus Christ. Luke was a native of the Hellenistic city of Antioch in Syria. The early church fathers ascribed to him authorship of both the Gospel according to Luke and the book of Acts of the Apostles, which originally formed a single literary work, referred to as Luke-Acts.

Almost all that we know about Luke comes from the New Testament. He was a physician, and a companion of Paul on some of his missionary journeys. Material found in his Gospel and not elsewhere includes much of the account of Our Lord's birth and infancy and boyhood, some of the most moving parables, such as that of the Good Samaritan and that of the Prodigal Son, and three of the sayings of Christ on the Cross: "Father, forgive them," "Thou shalt be with me in Paradise," and "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit."

Tradition says St. Luke was a physician; therefore  stained glass
he is also the Patron of Physicians and Surgeons. In the stained glass window, we see the Caduceus, the symbol of medicine, which features two snakes around a winged staff.

stained glass Above Luke, we see a winged bull (or ox). This is a traditional symbol for Saint Luke because he begins his gospel with an account of the priest, Zechariah, offering a sacrifice of a bull in the temple. The bull represents Christ's sacrifice.

The verse on this window is from the passage of Luke 18:35-43, which tells the story of a blind beggar who receives his sight after asking Jesus for mercy. The beggar then immediately follows Jesus, praising God. This story can also be seen in the bottom of the window.

Only in Luke's Gospel do we hear stories of the six miracles of Jesus as well as eighteen parables.
