Dear 5th Grade Parents,

We hope you and your families are doing well! This has certainly been unprecedented times and we miss your children very much!

We really appreciate all of the support you have given to your children in helping them with their schoolwork at home. Overall, we are very proud of our students and their efforts with remote learning! We know this is not the same as being in the classroom and that it can be challenging at times. Please know, we are always here for your children if they need our help with anything.

We have received some questions about how parents can best support their children at home and we wanted to give you some specifics on how we can work together to make remote learning as productive and successful as possible.

In ELA and Math, announcements, assignments, and feedback are given through Google Classroom. Assignments are designed to be able to be completed independently, or with minimal support. Students are always encouraged to reach out to their teachers if they have any questions or are struggling with a concept. However, it would be beneficial each day, when a student finishes his or her work, for a parent to look through the assignment/directions to see the work their child completed before they turn it in. This will help students know that they are being held to a high standard by both home and school. Please feel free to give your child tips on how to improve his or her work to ensure it reflects their best effort. Students are receiving feedback in Google Classroom on the tasks they complete. We ask that you please continue to monitor your child's work and encourage them to go back and check comments from the previous day. As part of their daily assignments, students are asked to read comments and make corrections from the day before, however this is not done all the time. This step is very important in monitoring comprehension and helping students achieve success. Therefore, the best way you can support your child in ELA and Math is to encourage your child to put forth their best effort before submitting work.

In special areas, assignments are typically posted on Google Classroom and the checklist document. Please reach out to individual special area teachers directly with any questions.

Throughout the week, teachers have prepared video lessons for the instruction of new content. These pre-recorded video lessons will be posted to the Google Classroom stream.  It is very important that students watch a video before attempting to begin an assignment.  Many of the questions that the students might have will be addressed in the video.  Additionally, we are meeting on Zoom with classes to discuss curriculum and check in with each other. Zoom schedules were shared in a Constant Contact. We encourage all students to attend these sessions since it is a time when we can check in with students, clarify expectations, and teach mini lessons. In addition, Mrs. Mapes and Ms. Jost have office hours every Friday between 10-11am. Students are able to join at any point to ask questions or check in.

Feel free to follow and check us out on Instagram to see what we are working on each week!
