"WESTVILLE DADS CAN" COMPETE @ARTS AND IDEAS TO FIGHT HUNGER
"A team of Westville dads is taking part in a competition to raise awareness of hunger in New Haven and support the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen. "CANning Hunger 2019" is part of this year's Arts and Ideas festival. Five teams from across New Haven are building sculptures on the theme of "Home" made entirely  out of canned goods. The sculptures will be displayed on the New Haven Green during Arts and Ideas; prizes will be awarded based on artistic merit and greatest number of cans used. At the end of the competition, all of the cans will be donated to the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen to help feed hungry families. Four dads -- Ryan Turner, Nick Perrone, Doug Bernstein and Nate Price -- have formed the team "Westville Dads Can!"  Their theme is "Think Global, Act Local" and they are building a model of our globe entirely out of cans of tuna. The Westville Dads need the Westville community's support: the finished sculpture will require over 1000 cans of tuna!  Please help them fight hunger by ordering an item from their Amazon wish list: CLICK HERE and it will ship directly to the team. They are already at 40% of their goal so every purchase will make a big difference!"

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: SNAIL MAIL

If you are an artist, writer, musician, designer, actor, dancer, painter, drawer, digital artist, maker, sculptor, printmaker, photographer, DIYer, or anything I forgot to mention, you can submit to this international exhibition! THROUGH THE CAMERA LENS TO THE PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT W/ KIM WESTON

Join photographer Kim Weston for this 6-week photography workshop. Beginning May 22nd - June 26th, this class will meet on Wednesday evenings from 7-9pm, and is open to both brand new and returning students.

About the Workshop: In this beginner to intermediate course, students improve their creative and technical skills. Through lectures, assignments and critique, students explore the practical functions of the digital camera and learn how to compose a strong and meaningful photograph. Presentations on historical and contemporary artists will introduce several genres in photography, such as portraiture, landscape, and documentary. Expand your knowledge of your camera's aperture, shutter speed and host of functions. Be willing to push yourself to the next level to learn how to get what you see. Please bring your camera and five or more prints to the first class.

REGISTRATION LINK: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/through-the-camera-lens-to-the-photographic-print-tickets-61601717395

NOTE: Students sign up for the full 6-week session, not individual classes. The total cost is $30.

About the Instructor: Kim Weston is a fine art photographer with a graphic design and painters background living in New York and Connecticut. She received her BFA from Cooper Union and is a recent MFA graduate from ICP-Bard College in Advanced Photographic Practice. Photography has allowed Kim Weston to teach, freelance in the commercial industry and be a visual artist. She questions how we can see the world when illusions surround us. Art promotes presence and an opportunity to see what's true in our spirit and the discrepancy in our everyday. The gestures seen in her images are the product of chance and intention.  kimwestonimages.com

PLEASE NOTE: This workshop is presented by ArtEcon Initiative ( www.ArtEconInitiative.org), whose mission is to produce free, or low cost, accessible arts and community programs in the Westville-West Rock neighborhoods of New Haven, CT. Your class fee goes directly towards supporting the additional costs of an in-depth workshop. If you have the means, we would be grateful for any and all additional contributions, so that we can continue to offer accessible programs.
