No Handbook on Giftedness!

Whether it is your team, your boss or your kids, or yourself, misunderstanding "smart people" can be a real problem.

Do you know how much conflict is generated in teams because the Visual Spatials and Auditory Sequentials see the world totally differently?

Moody, Aloof, defiant, Fragile, Argumentative, Arrogant, Condescending, Overly Emotional, Self Absorbed, Finicky, Needy, Disorganized and so many more...

All these descriptors of gifted people that point to the lack of understanding we have about what come with the package of Giftedness.

Join us to learn the complexities of Giftedness that will allow you to be successful with all the gifted people in your life.

The
Stupidity
of
Google

In November of last year 20,000 Google employees walked out for a day worldwide:
Chicago, London, Seattle, Singapore, Dublin, Hyderabad and Mountain View (Google HQ) to protest the outrageously poor handling of Sexual Harassment claims. Most notably giving Andy Rubin a $90 million kiss on the check as he was forced out of Google due to repeated claims of sexual harassment. (Click here for NYT complete article)
After less confrontational attempts at making the point failed, Claire Stapleton and Meredith Whittaker organized the one-day protest.  The geniuses at Google, of course, gave them the Google Courage Award for bringing this crucial topic to management’s attention, right? No, of course not, they attempted to demote them and diminish their roles.  With the resources available to Google (virtually unlimited) they chose to shoot themselves in the foot.  Why? Sorry all I’ve got is STUPID.  Not IQ stupid but that EQ stupid that tech companies are so famous for. (Click here for complete NYT article)

Susan has been warning “Don’t Be Google” for a while now, for increasingly obvious reasons.  Compare this idiocy to Nike where the brave top women executives put their careers on the line to force CEO Mark Parker to address the systematic harassment and pay discrimination at the company.  His reaction? Six top executives got fired and 7,000 employees got a raise to approach parity.

Topping this Marc Benioff CEO of Salesforce when confronted by the HR VP Cindy Robbins, responded by immediately dedicating $6 million to fix the pay inequity that was everywhere in the company at every level. Of equal importance in my mind was his edict that all meetings that he attends must have 30% female attendees. He was tired of going to all male meetings!  Visibility to the top is a crucial to talent being recognized and promoted.

My point here is all this big systemic change is possible. Not just at Nike or Salesforce but at your company too.  Courageous men and women will need to act together to force action (men this is our fight too don’t leave it to the women).  Men at the top will have to overcome their stupidity.   This usually requires a kick in a spot that gets there full attention.

Enough already with the studies and committees!   “Just Do It” is not just for Nike.   Bravo to the women who have been banding together at the executive level to force action at great personal peril.  Susan sees this as a direct offshoot of the #metoo movement not a few random examples.  We are in a unique moment in time.  Don’t let it pass without action for your organization!

As always we invite your comments
