Parish “Welcome Back” Survey Results

Thanks to the 133 families who participated in our recent Welcome Back survey at St. John. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know how you are feeling about the changes we made during the last 18 months, whether we should keep these changes and the things we hope to bring back in the near future. We also appreciate your comments, notes and ideas! For those who asked for our prayers for loved ones that were lost or hurting, we have added the names to our Book of Prayers in the vestibule of the Church.

As we continue to keep up with the ever-changing information, especially with regard to the Delta variant, we will make our next step decisions based on the current guidelines and suggestions by the Archdiocese to ensure the safety of our community.

Asante Sana, Fr. Crispin

Help Us Meet Our ACA Goal by the End of August!
GOAL: $91,896
PLEDGED: $75,316 (81%)
NEED:  $16,580

I am the Church, you are the Church, we are the Church, together!

Thank you to the 195 families who have pledged to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal so far. If you have not yet donated, please help us meet our goal by the end of this month!

The easiest way is to give is online here or call the ACA office at 1-800-809-4921.
PUMP OUT SOME HELP

In normal times, our St. Vincent de Paul conference members visit needy neighbors in their homes. During the pandemic, more people have become homeless. They live in RVs or tents. In early 2020 Seattle Public Utilities started partnering with Saint Vincent de Paul in an RV pump-out program designed to cut down on spills involving human waste.

Some of our members have been accompanying the pump-out team on their rounds in our area. While SPU provides the pump-out, they have been meeting the people in RVs, and other homeless people nearby, and responding to their other needs. Just recently we distributed 45 hygiene kits on a single outing.

You can help.
• Donate small, unopened items for the hygiene kits, such as soaps, hygiene wipes, tissues, shaving cream, first aid ointment, Band-Aids, deodorant, nail clippers, toothpaste, shampoo and combs.
• We still also need nonperishable food.

There is a barrel in the vestibule for these donations, or you can drop them off at the parish office.

And, of course, we always appreciate your donations of funds so we can continue helping our neighbors in need.

Thank you for your support.
The St. John Book Club is reading Fr. Richard Rohr’s Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life for its next meeting at 4pm on Sunday, August 22nd. If you’d like to join the discussion, contact Diana Grusczynski at diana.grusczynski@outlook.com. Here are a couple of nuggets from the book to whet your appetite:

“… the task of the first half of life is to create a proper container for one's life and answer the first essential questions: “What makes me significant?” “How can I support myself?” and “Who will go with me?” The task of the second half of life is, quite simply, to find the actual contents that this container was meant to hold and deliver.”
The bottom line of the Gospel is that most of us have to hit some kind of bottom before we even start the real spiritual journey.”

Laudato Si
in Action
This or that?
You want to do the right thing for the environment. You care about the climate crisis but sometimes the right choice isn’t clear. You know the benefits of using a reusable water bottle and your own coffee mug, but should you hand wash those dishes or run the dishwasher, use paper grocery bags or reusable ones?

Pope Francis reminds us:

to replace consumption with sacrifice, greed with generosity, wastefulness with a spirit of sharing, an asceticism which “entails learning to give, and not simply to give up. It is a way of loving, of moving gradually away from what I want to what God’s world needs.

Here are some practical ways to care for our common home.
